Bracket Buster Weekend: It's that time of the year again

It happens every year.  Someone will make the terrible mistake of filling out their brackets according to ESPN or a network like CBS Sports.  Then they find out that these so called "experts" never seem to get their picks right.  They are "experts" right?  C'mon people they are only human, but if there's one thing March Madness has taught me the past few years, it's that you're probably better off filling in your bracket blindfold than listening to the sports networks. Well, kind of. Just don't be upset if your sisters picks end up being better than yours. Tongue out

AFTER THIS WEEKEND OF COLLEGE BASKETBALL, what did we learn?

1) Tennessee is for real, folks.

Now, other analysts will be quick to point out that Memphis was overrated and that their undefeated record was due to a feeble Conference USA, but going undefeated in any conference is impressive. What's scary is that Tennessee walked into FedExForum, played one of their worst games of the year, and knocked off that undefeated #1 Memphis team.  Niether team played partcularly well, but Tennessee proved that it can win the tough game.  And that's why they are #1 for the first time in school history, much to Bruce Pearl's liking.

2) We can't write off Drake any longer.

That was a great win over a solid Butler team. It's not easy to walk into Butler and win by seven, let alone win. I've been watching the MVC all year & have watched Drake play vs. Illinois State twice on television.  They spread the ball around and find open shots real well.  Senior Josh Young (#20) is the Larry Bird Player of the Year. Doubted by experts who find the MVC to be weak this year, it was their first nationally televised game, and they were flying high.  And for those who watched the game, Leonard Houston was definitely a cut above. 3) What's going on with Kansas?

This team went from being the midseason pick to win the NCAA tournament to losing at Oklahoma State, the bottom of the cellar team in the Big 12. Granted OSU is tough at home, but this is a game Kansas has got to win if they expect to get a #1 seed come March.  C'mon even Texas A&M managed to win at Gallagher-Iba Arena.  Kansas needs to pick up its intensity, they're starting to look like teams of year's past that have flopped towards the end of the year.

4) The MVC may not be as good as years past, but the league can still compete.

Sure, the conference may be down if you're looking at it from the likes of Creighton & Southern Illinois.  Both sit behind Illinois State ;) and the Drake Bulldogs.  All year long experts have been saying that the conference will only get 1 bid, but 2 is possible if Drake doesn't win the conference tournament or ISU wins its way into the conference final. The Conference went 5-0 in the BracketBuster games on TV and 9-2 overall. Looks like ISU vs. SIU on March 1st looms large as a huge game for both.  Experts are even talking about giving the Sun Belt Conference two bids. Western Kentucky & South Alabama both look solid but only one should get a bid. I've watched both and I can think of four MVC teams that would beat them.  Where is Bradley you might ask?  They might not have a shot as Ruffin could be out after alledgedly choking a woman last Saturday. SOME BRIEF POINTS TO CONSIDER:

  • Why is Kentucky receiving attention for the NCAA tournament or even the Top 25? It's a rebuilding year Wildcat basketball fans, get used to it-especially when you go 9-9 against the Top 200.
  • After watching Bracketology on ESPN, I saw that Ohio State was in the projected field of 65.  Why not put another at large from a mid major conference in their place? Ohio State has looked awful when I've watched them lately. They are not a good basketball team. Their wins over Florida and Syracuse at home were at the beginning of the year when both teams were just learning to play together.  I think they will play their way out of the tournament since Ohio State has lost at Iowa (RPI 167) and at Michigan (RPI 153) recently.

EVALUATING THE OVERRATED & THE UNDERRATED COME TOURNEY TIME

OVERRATED (as of 2/25) Sealed

1)Texas A&M (15-1 hot start reminds me a lot of the Clemson team last year that went 18-0 before missing the tournament, except this lousy Big 12 team might make the tournament)

2)Villanova-(they have some good wins like the one vs Georgetown, but most of their wins at are home)

3)Arizona State-(Hey Mr. Lunardi, just because they have a 7-7 record in conference in the overhyped PAC 10 doesn't make them a pick for the field of 65)

UNDERRATEDLaughing

1) Notre Dame (Aren't we all kind of overlooking this team?)

2) Drake (see beginning of article above on Bulldogs)

3) Louisville/Texas

This was my first blog ever, so sure to be smaller & have stupid mistakes and minor lapses in judgement, but I look forward to writing some of the best articles you will ever read! Here's to hoping the Ray's don't make a stupid mistake by signing Bonds! Cool
