Denver Nugget, Carmelo Anthony, smiled when he was fouled by a San Antonio Spurs player during a game last week. Meanwhile, a Spur rebounded Anthony's shot. He whizzed a pass to a teammate. The teammate passed to another teammate. Then, a Spur dunked the ball.
I was trained to always get back on defense while I was playing in high school during the late 1950's, regardless of who fouled me, or not. When the ball is not in my team's hands, it has to be in the other's team's hands. "Get back! Get back! Get back!" Coach Bill Gogan hollered at us.
Now, Anthony, his fourth year as a professional basketball, would rather be pissed off about being fouled without a call, lope back on defense, where his man, dunks the ball for two points, and smile about how wronged he was. Well, check out any Detroit Piston, any San Antonio Spur, any player on any team that wins, and you will see them racing back to get on defense.
George Karl sucks on whatever he sucks on. Anthony smiles. His teammates break their bums to get back on defense. Perhaps George Karl and Carmelo Anthony can take some lessons from Marcus Camby, Tony Parker, Eduardo Najera, Tim Duncan and Allan Iverson on how to act like adults, professionals, and teammates in order to win and become NBA champs.
