The Opening Drive: Week 1, 2011

The first Opening Drive of the 2011 NFL season. God I missed this. On a day of remembrance, we also celebrate as Americans with the kick-off of our country’s favorite game. Here are the match-ups to watch in week one.

(0-0)          Cincinnati Bengals at
(0-0)          Cleveland Browns

This could be ferociously ugly. One rookie quarterback and another with only a few starts under his belt. There’s going to be tons of hand-offs, few risky passes and lots of field goals.

(0-0)          Philadelphia Eagles at
(0-0)          St. Louis Rams

We get to see how good the Eagles really are as they take on a supposedly legitimate Rams squad. St. Louis isn’t going to get any favors early in their schedule, but they have to take care of their business at home. But shutting down Michael Vick probably isn’t going to happen.

(0-0)          Detroit Lions at
(0-0)          Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Two teams with heavy expectations and young quarterbacks meet in Tampa Bay. Detroit’s offense lit it up during the preseason, so let’s see if that momentum continues. Tampa’s secondary is ripe for the picking.

(0-0)          Pittsburgh Steelers at
(0-0)          Baltimore Ravens

Speaking of weaker secondaries, don’t be shocked if the Steelers start spreading the Ravens out to exploit their receiving corps’ clear advantage. Baltimore’s offense is better than in recent campaigns, but they might not have enough to hang with Pittsburgh in this possible tie-breaker.

(0-0)          Indianapolis Colts at
(0-0)          Houston Texans

This could be worth watching just to see if Kerry Collins’ legs fall off. Otherwise the Colts should get smoked.

(0-0)          Dallas Cowboys at
(0-0)          New York Jets

As much as I don’t trust Plaxico Burress (as a receiver) yet, the Cowboys are going to invite success today, missing corner Terrence Newman and starting a banged-up Mike Jenkins. I’d say shoot-out, but that Jets defense won’t allow it.

Enjoy the games everyone!
