The Final Drive: Week 1, 2011

Now THAT was a crazy week one in the NFL! We saw upsets a’plenty, including the Steelers getting slapped around in Baltimore, the Bills putting up a 40-burger and Tom Brady going postal. The Final Drive gets started right now.

(1-0) Green Bay Packers 42
(0-1) New Orleans Saints 34

It had all the scoring, high-flying and drama a fan could want from a regular season opener. Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees lit up the scoreboards, but a freaking failed running play on a goal line stand sealed the win for the Packers. Losing Marques Colston for four weeks will hurt.

(1-0) Cincinnati Bengals 27
(0-1) Cleveland Browns 17

Continuing the injury train, Andy Dalton left this one with a wrist injury, giving way to Bruce Gradkowski. Cincy wasn’t supposed to win, but they pulled out a scrapper. Maybe the Browns still need a little work…

(1-0) Buffalo Bills 41
(0-1) Kansas City 7

Okay, I will say I had doubts about Kansas City this season, but they have to be better than this score suggests. Losing safety Eric Berry for the season with a torn ACL won’t help that defense at all.

(1-0) Philadelphia Eagles 31
(0-1) St. Louis Rams 13

Mike Vick’s certainly had better games, but against a banged-up Rams he didn’t need to. If LeSean McCoy keeps rushing like he did (122 yards on 15 carries), the Eagles are going to be uber-dangerous. For the Rams, losing Danny Amendola and Steven Jackson is killer. Jackson may be back sooner than later, but Amendola’s dislocated elbow will keep him on the sidelines for a while.

(1-0) Detroit Lions 27
(0-1) Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20

Well Matthew Stafford played an entire game and the Lions won. Good for them. For Tampa… yeah they still bore me.

(1-0) Baltimore Ravens 35
(0-1) Pittsburgh Steelers 7

Pittsburgh has as many turnovers as they had points. Not exactly a winning statistic. The Raven offense physically overpowered the Steelers from the first snap, setting the tone for the eventual rematch. Looks like the Steelers got soft after getting all that money.

(1-0) Houston Texans 34
(0-1) Indianapolis Colts 7

Yeah, I knew they would be awful, but I thought that the Colts would be slightly better than this. I mean, there is some legitimate talent on that team… isn’t there?

(1-0) Washington Redskins 28
(0-1) New York Giants 14

Rex Grossman everyone. Who the **** saw this coming?

(1-0) Arizona Cardinals 28
(0-1) Carolina Panthers 21

For everyone doubting Cam Newton’s ability to be a quarterback, his 422 yards through the air and rushing TD is a pretty good silencer. Just as quietly, Kevin Kolb had a solid first game as a Cardinal. Great start for both franchises.

(1-0) New York Jets 27
(0-1) Dallas Cowboys 24

Oh how it hurts to be Tony Romo right now. Dude makes one horrible throw towards Darelle Revis and it costs him the game. Well, that blocked punt didn’t do him any favors. Nor did that fumble near the goal line. Hm.

(1-0) New England Patriots 38
(0-1) Miami Dolphins 24

Even better than watching Brady go for 517 yards or the Wes Welker 99 yard reception was Ron Jaworski’s “shit” slip. I love live TV. And now I love old “Jaws.” Miami’s “top 5” defense got schooled.

That’s it for week one! (I have no need to talk of Broncos-Raiders.) See you next Sunday!
