The Final Drive: Week 5, 2011

Week five in the NFL featured a slew of comebacks, close victories and one very emotional win. The Eagles keep falling to Earth while Cam Newton keeps falling short and the Packers keep on winning. Let’s get to the best of week five in this week’s Final Drive!

(4-1) Buffalo Bills 31
(1-4) Philadelphia Eagles 24

Shpladow! Philly’s in a sad state now. They mounted a late comeback, but the Eagles fell short thanks to a late interception, the fourth of Michael Vick’s day. Andy Reid’s team has VERY little room for error now if they expect to make the playoffs. Meanwhile Buffalo’s running game has started to take shape and their defense is creating multiple turnovers a game. That’s a recipe for success in the NFL.

(2-3) Seattle Seahawks 36
(3-2) New York Giants 25

Seattle mounted its own comeback on the road, despite losing Tarvaris Jackson to an injury. (For the best?) After pulling ahead late with a little more than 2 ½ minutes to go, the Seahawks sealed the win with a pick six off Eli Manning at their goal line. Tom Coughlin is going to take his belt off tonight…

(4-1) New Orleans Saints 30
(1-4) Carolina Panthers 27

With many seeing this as the sexy upset pick of the week, Cam Newton kept it close with Drew Brees but couldn’t complete the game-tying drive thanks to a inopportune holding penalty. Newton’s clearly the real deal, but he’ll need help from his defense if he’s going to start a professional winning streak.

(3-2) Oakland Raiders 25
(3-2) Houston Texans 20

It wasn’t an overly pretty win, but then again, the Raiders never really fit that description. Getting two interceptions off Matt Schaub (including one on the final play of the game) kept the Raiders ahead on the day after their longtime owner Al Davis passed away. It was a great emotional win for the Raiders. For Houston though, it drops them down to earth and showcases the troubles they’ll face without Andre Johnson.

(4-1) San Francisco 49ers 48
(3-2) Tampa Bay Buccaneers 3

The Bucs still bore me. San Francisco slightly less so. This win probably seals the NFC West title.

(4-1) San Diego Chargers 29
(1-4) Denver Broncos 24

The only reason I bring this game up? Tim Tebow finally saw some action… and looked pretty decent. He’s not an overly crisp passer yet, but he can buy time in the pocket and sling it pretty far with some velocity. Tebow replaced Kyle Orton at halftime because of Orton’s ineffectiveness and turnovers. I don’t care anymore. It’s time to give Tebow the reigns for the rest 2011 and see what he can do.

(4-1) New England Patriots 30
(2-3) New York Jets 21

Suck it Jets. Yet another opponent that causes me to root FOR the Patriots. I feel dirty. Wes Welker picked up another 124 yards and BenJarvus Green-Ellis put an impressive 136 yards and two TD’s as the Patriots handled their division “rival.” The Jet offense looked slightly better than in recent weeks, but against that soft New England D it should have excelled. Now they slip below .500 and look out-of-sorts.

(5-0) Green Bay Packers 25
(2-3) Atlanta Falcons 14

After getting jumped on early 14-0, the Packer defense manned up and shut down the Falcons offense for the final 42 minutes of action as their offense heated up. Aaron Rodgers kept his unbelievable play going as the Packers climbed to 5-0. There aren’t a lot of possible losses on Green bay’s schedule, so stay tuned…
