Brett Favre to Stay Retired

Well, the Brett Favre saga appears to be over… for now.

The routinely flip-flopping quarterback informed ESPN’s Ed Werder of his decision to stay retired  after telling Brad Childress of the Minnesota Vikings.  Favre explained that he was unsure of his body’s ability to withstand another grueling NFL season and the training camp and preseason schedule that accompany it.

I gotta say, I’m shocked. I almost had no doubt Favre would return to the league for the Vikings after he had surgery on his throwing shoulder several weeks ago. The NFC North was set to have undergone the most drastic quarterback changes of any off-season in NFL history.

Now that he won’t join the most dangerous running back in the league, how does this impact the Chicago Bears?

In my opinion, not a lot. Chicago still has a great chance to win the division behind Jay Cutler (giggity) and Matt Forte. Minnesota is still their main competition, as any team with Adrian Peterson is dangerous. Green Bay will be much improved, but it they get over nine wins I’ll be shocked. Detroit… well they’re Detroit. I doubt this will be the year they finally break through. But at least it can’t get any worse, right?

Favre would not have been perfect solution in Minnesota, only the best available. No offense, but he’s almost a lock for two interceptions a game. Minnesota already has a younger, crappier Brett Favre in Sage Rosefels, who while offering up four turnovers a contest can still sling it. Tarvaris Jackson won’t turn it over as much, but he can’t go out and win you a game with his arm. Don’t even get me started on third ranked John David Booty. Every Vikings QB sucks or has “potential” that they’ll never reach. There, I said it.

Favre was an interesting idea because of his experience and downfield arm. Unfortunately it’s that same experience and rocket arm that is pushing Brett out of the game. He’s almost forty and his throwing arm isn’t 100%. There was no way this season would have worked out well in the end, and he made the right call to stay at home in Mississippi

I for one won’t miss the media coverage at all. It’s time the NFL network gets back to real news instead of sending reporters to camp out in front of Favre’s home.  (Though the Favre watch graphic was amusing, I must say.)

Brett, you have nothing to prove anymore. Now go relax on your tractor while wearing your wrangler jeans and practicing with high school kids. We love that and we love you. We just don’t love this never-ending indecision.

Go sit the ‘eff down Brett. You’ve earned it.
