Astros hanging above .500

Sorry about my brief hiatus. Very busy week at my day job at the newspaper. With Labor Day, we usually put in extra efforts the day before so that we don't have to kill ourselves when we return...

...Yes, I'm very happy that Craig Biggio's jersey number 7 has joined Astros immortality with Jeff Bagwell and the other venerable Astros. Now, what's next for the Killer B's is the Hall of Fame. Honestly, if a light-hitting, somewhat overrated shortstop like Ozzie Smith gets in on the first ballot with more than 90 percent of the vote, why shouldn't Biggio and Bagwell get in on the first one as well?

Seeing Biggio's number on the three retired jerseys reminds me again of how much the Astros' current railroad uniform absolutely sucks. Would love to see them return to the blue and orange look with a modern twist on the sixties shooting-star logo. Yes, I'm a broken record. I won't quit until these ugly monstrosities will be gone. I have an idea for a cap logo, and if I can ever figure out how to do it on a computer, I'll post it...

...LaTroy Hawkins is starting to look like a steal for the Astros. Released by the New York Yankees after posting a 1-1 record with a 5.71 ERA in 33 games, Hawkins has yet to allow a run in his first 13 outings. Moreover, he's given up only three hits while stiking out 15 in nine innings pitched. Only three walks.

What's also funny: Hawkins wears jersey number 22. You know, the number Roger Clemens wore while in Houston. Makes me think the Rocket's stock is going down. Quickly. And, of course, infielder Ty Wigginton wears Andy Pettitte's old number 21...

...The Astros are currently riding a three-game winning streak, courtesy of Friday night's win against the St. Louis Cardinals. Lance Berkman got his first walk-off homerun of his career by going to the opposite field last night. Very nice.
