(15-3) New England Patriots 23
(13-5) Baltimore Ravens 20

They may have had their issues, but the New England Patriots are back in the Super Bowl after the dramatic finish at the end of regulation. In the first half the Patriots traded scores with their opponents, as Baltimore matched them point for point thanks to early mistakes. Brady led his unit down for a 29 yard Gostkowski field goal so Flacco came back to set up a 20 yarder for Billy Cundiff. BenJarvus Green-Ellis punched it in from seven yards out, so Flacco tosses it six yards to Dennis Pitta. At 10-10, the Patriots broke the pattern by kicking a field goal late in the second and keeping the Ravens off the board before they got the ball to start the second half.

Up first, the AFC title game!

(13-4) Baltimore Ravens at
(14-3) New England Patriots
3:00 PM ET, CBS

Who loves a rematch? This guy. After getting unceremoniously escorted out of the postseason in 2009 by these Ravens, the Patriots get a second home-stand to redeem their loss and get to Tom Brady’s fifth Super Bowl. To accomplish this, New England’s defense must step up to the plate and at least hit a double. They don’t need to shut out the Ravens, but holding them to no more than 20 points would be a nice buffer for Brady and the offense. Baltimore’s offense line will have the advantage over New England’s front three, so Ray Rice figures to have holes to run through. It’ll be the second and third levels of the Patriot defense that figures heavily in the final score. Jerod Mayo and Rob Ninkovich are playmakers at the linebacker position, but they’ll need to keep tight ends Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta in their peripherals. (Not that Flacco really gets it to his tight ends enough.) Baltimore’s offense doesn’t have a ton of wrinkles to it, as was exposed last week against the Texans. Anquan Boldin doesn’t get nearly enough targets, but he’s never deep. Torrey Smith only runs a go-route, so as long as Kyle Arrington or Devin McCourty don’t get beat off the block and the safeties Chung and Ihedigbo stay deep, the Patriots shouldn’t have an issue keeping the Ravens off the scoreboard. With all the pressure on Joe Flacco, you’d think it would be the time for him to rise to the occasion. I’m not buying it. He’s slow in the pocket and doesn’t get the ball out quickly. That means the Patriots could get a few good hits on Joe. If you see Flacco struggling on third down and the kicking unit coming on the field early, the Ravens will be in trouble.

I’m off hating them for all their “winning.”(13-4) Baltimore Ravens 20
(11-7) Houston Texans 13

This was one of those “ugly but thrilling” kinds of performances, with plenty of mediocre action to be found. Certainly Texan Jacoby Jones had his issues (that fumble in the first was costly indeed), but the death threats we’ve been hearing about is utterly ridiculous. The dude totally sucked yesterday, I’ll give you that. But it wasn’t bad enough to warrant that kind of reaction. Meanwhile, Houston’s defense managed to keep it closer than it should have been, coming up with a huge goal line stand in the third quarter.  They even got help from Arian Foster, whose 132 yards is the equivalent of running “all over” the Ravens, whose run defense is historically stellar.

(11-6) Houston Texans at
(12-4) Baltimore Ravens
1:00 PM ET, CBS

After putting down the Bengals last week, the Texans stay in the AFC North but get a serious upgrade in competition. T.J. Yates hasn’t exactly been lighting up the scoreboard but he’s gotten by due to a fantastic Houston rushing attack behind a great offensive line that clears holes for Arian Foster. To beat Baltimore though, Yates will need more of those deep throws to Andre Johnson to pull the defense away from the line of scrimmage. The Ravens secondary has grown during the year, but they’re still not totally battle-tested. Baltimore will surely be gearing up to stop the run before all else. That rookie QB is going to have to stand up to a pass rush that includes Haloti Ngata and Terrell Suggs. Have fun putting up anything more than 13-17 points on that T.J.

Even with all of their crummy losses, the Ravens could once again push to the top of the AFC with a win over the one-loss Niners. 10 Record: 12-4
2011 Prediction: 12-4

I'll never get tired of using this pic.

Baltimore Ravens

Poor Joe Flacco. Were he in any other division he’d probably have gotten much more praise, considering where he’s at in his career. Unfortunately he has to look up at Ben and the Steelers every year. This season could be a different story with the addition of speedy receiver Lee Evans. Coming over from Buffalo, Evans gives Flacco the deep threat he needs to compliment Anquan Boldin. The offensive line has been re-tooled, installing Bryant McKinnie at left tackle, rookie Marshal Yanda at right guard and Michael Oher back to right tackle, where he likely fits best. Fullback Vontae Leach was a huge pick-up in free agency and should clear holes for Ray Rice just like he did for Arian Foster, the leading rusher last season. As great as the defense has always been, this current incarnation of the Ravens unit has little depth at the corner position. Drafting Jimmy Smith was a great call, but he needs time to develop before he can be a true number one. Terrence Cody is a mountain in the middle of their 3-4 scheme, sucking up blockers meant for Ray Lewis, the man that won’t shut up. After missing the entirety of last season, first round pick Sergio Kindle will see the field as a pass-rushing specialist, giving the Ravens a much needed play-maker. Oh yeah, and Ed Reed’s still at safety. (But he is going to slow down, right?) They probably won’t win the division, but they’ll get to the playoffs for certain.

et's take a look at how this weekend's games went down.

(13-4) Pittsburgh Steelers 31
(13-5) Baltimore Ravens 24

So for a Baltimore team that went out and snagged top wide receivers in order to take the next step in the playoffs, they certainly managed to completely ignore them in the playoffs. After a first half where the Steelers shot themselves in the foot, the Ravens fell apart in the second half, unable to mount ANY sort of offense aside from a late field goal. While the Steelers committed two turnovers early on (including a crazy fumble picked up by Cory Redding), the Ravens returned the favor and threw away their shots at the AFC title. Joe Flacco once again showed his inexperience, only completing 16 of his 30 attempts for 125 yards. Baltimore never found or committed to its running game, which handicapped them as they tried to control the clock. (It didn’t help that Ray Rice fumbled for the first time this entire year either.)

Let’s delve into some football!

Saturday

(13-4) Baltimore Ravens at
(12-4) Pittsburgh Steelers

The Breakdown:

Who’s ready for some football? And I don’t mean this offense-infused game we’ve been seeing the past few years. I’m talking about the vicious, hard-hitting and low scoring brand of football we always manage to see whenever this rivalry renews. Pittsburgh’s week off let them rest up for this smash-mouth affair while the Ravens pummeled the Chiefs in Arrowhead last week. Baltimore has reloaded on the offensive side of the ball, bringing in three name receivers in Anquan Boldin, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Donte Stallworth to play next to Derrick Mason. When you add them to Todd Heap and running back Ray Rice, the Ravens are surprisingly loaded on offense. Their victory lies in Joe Flacco’s hands. If Flacco avoids costly mistakes as he has most of the year (unlike that fumble in the last game these teams met), they’ll keep this road show going.

Can you say drubbing? Because that’s exactly what this turned into after Kansas City took the lead 7-3 in the first quarter. From there on out the Ravens had their way with KC, forcing countless miscues in the form of five turnovers from the normally possession protective Chief offense. Todd Haley’s team just didn’t seem prepared for this spotlight or this opponent. Not even attempting to throw to Dwayne Bowe is a huge mistake. I don’t care what coverage they were rolling his way, you call plays that get him open and you throw him the freaking ball. They guy had 15 touchdowns in the regular season. That’s worse than ignoring Reggie Wayne for an entire game… oh wait.

Let's break it down!

(6-2) Baltimore Ravens at
(6-2) Atlanta Falcons

This inter-conference match-up has far-reaching implications across the top of the NFL power rankings. Baltimore, fresh off a trouncing of the Dolphins, heads to the Georgia Dome to take on the Falcons who just cemented their first place status in the NFC South with a win over the Bucs. While the Ravens own two of the best wins of 2010 (Steelers, Jets), the Falcons are 4-0 at home this season, setting up a Thursday of epic proportions. Matt Ryan excels in front of his home crowd, but his best weapon Roddy White won't be 100% after dealing with a knee injury and Ed Reed is healthy and patrolling the secondary for the Ravens. Against the Falcons' decent defensive backfield, Joe Flacco should have some open targets. I'm leaning towards Baltimore but I won't be surprised by anything... unless there's a blow-out.

Stallworth's speed should allow Anquan Boldin to get even more space to run across the middle. Miami's a tough out, but they still haven't learned how to overcome better defenses. Baltimore came into NE last year and just embarrassed the Patriots like they had never seen before. With two weeks to prepare, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are nearly unbeatable. After trading Randy Moss, they won't be able to stretch the field against the Ravens as well, which means look for the short passing game that was so effective during the Pats' Super Bowl runs. So I guess the Jets forgot to bring an offense with them this season. When you have twice as many penalty yards as passing yards, that's a problem. Mark Sanchez did not look like even an average NFL QB. Let's see how much talk we hear out of New York this week. Baltimore held tough despite multiple turnovers and found a way to win, which is what Super Bowl-hopeful teams do.

Oh, and that fat and lazy Haynesworth guy will play a bit.

Baltimore Ravens at
New York Jets

Monday night's opening game is going to be a slug-fest. Both defenses talk loud and hit hard, but there can be only one! (Sorry, Highlander on the brain. How often does that happen?) This game boils down to one fact: I trust Joe Flacco more than Mark Sanchez. Ravens win.

the internet sucks for creepy famous guys like Ben.

Baltimore Ravens

The sexy pick in the AFC (besides the Jets), the Ravens made some massive upgrades on the offensive side of the ball to help out the emerging Joe Flacco. They traded for Anquan Boldin, signed Donte Stallworth, re-signed Derrick Mason and signed T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Unfortunately Stallworth, the only speed guy of the bunch is out for the first month or so because of a broken foot. Still, having possession receivers like Boldin, Housh and Mason is always a good thing. Having three of them is gravy. Expect Ray Rice to put up monster numbers this year out of the backfield. Michael Oher has been moved over to left tackle, an odd move because of how well Jared Gaither was playing there. Baltimore drafted tight ends Ed Dickson (3rd round) and Dennis Pitta (4th) to help out the offense behind the catch-happy Todd Heap.

I guess the Ravens used up all their karma. After everything went Baltimore's way last week against New England, they fell completely flat in Indianapolis Saturday night, missing every opportunity imaginable. Against a lesser foe, they could have mounted a comeback. Against Peyton Manning and the Colts, they had no chance.

It'll be a close shoot-out.

Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts
8:15PM ET CBS

Ray Lewis and the Ravens made the most of their playoff berth by completely dominating the New England Patriots last weekend. Now they travel to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy to meet Peyton Manning. QB Joe Flacco's hip injury was overblown, so he'll be ready to sling it downfield if he has to. However, I won't be surprised if the Ravens come out with the same gameplan as last weekend, running the ball 52 times and only attempting ten passes. Lewis and safety Ed Reed keep their emotional defense in check and disciplined against Manning or it could be a long day.

Well that happened.

From the very first play from scrimmage, it was obvious: These aren't your dad's Patriots. (If you dad was a Pats fan two years ago.) Ray Rice took the opening hand-off 83 yards to the endzone to put the Ravens up 7-0 en route to embarrassing Bill Belichick's Patriots 33-14.

Here's the Opening Drive of Wild-Card Sunday!

(9-7) Baltimore Ravens at (10-6) New England Patriots
1:00PM ET CBS

After a deep playoff run last year, the Ravens struggled to find consistency this season on the defensive of the ball, much to everyone's surprise. Running back Ray Rice has the ability to pound the ball as well as catch passes out of the backfield for sophomore QB Joe Flacco. Receiver Derrick Mason hasn't been as dependable in recent weeks, but he still managed another 1000-yard season. Tight end Todd Heap caught 6 touchdowns this season, second on the team. Keep an eye on wide-out Demetrius Williams, who might be Flacco's best downfield threat. On defense, safety Ed Reed should be healthy enough to play after nursing a groin injury for part of the regular season. Ray Lewis is as demonstrative as ever, but that defensive line featuring Haloti Ngata and Trevor Pryce will be the biggest factor in whether Baltimore can pull off the upset.

(5-11) Oakland Raiders 13

The Ravens make it into the postseason by beating the Raiders. Charlie Frye started the game for Oakland but eventually gave way to JaMarcus Russell who was equally as inept. Give credit to the Ravens for taking advantage of a lackluster Raider offense and making it into the playoffs for the second straight year.

(8-7) Baltimore Ravens at (5-10) Oakland Raiders

If the Ravens win, they're in. That may be tougher than it sounds if the Raiders decide to try for one of their upset-specials. However, as Bruce Gradkowski is still out at QB, JaMarcus Russell will get the start. Russell can't be mediocre if the Raiders are going to play spoiler. Since I don't believe he can do that for four quarters, the Ravens should win.

The Steelers took advantage of Raven penalties and missed opportunities to win a physical game and stay alive in the playoff hunt. Unfortunately for them, Baltimore still has the inside track to the post-season, only needing to beat Oakland next week in order to advance. The Steelers may have dug themselves too big a hole of which to climb out.

(8-6) Baltimore Ravens at (7-7) Pittsburgh Steelers

After a string of poor losses, the Steelers are back and in command of their playoff lives. Beating the Ravens would pull them back into the mix while simultaneously putting the Ravens on the outs. Without Troy Polamalu, the Steelers must rely on another big game from Big Ben Roethlisberger. With their week twelve meeting ending with an overtime field goal, this rematch is up for grabs. On Heinz Field, I'll give a slight edge to Pittsburgh.

By the end of the first quarter Bears QB Jay Cutler had already tossed two interceptions. The Baltimore Ravens had already exchanged those gifts for fourteen points. After six total turnovers and nary an offensive score to be found, the lesson was obvious. I already knew my Bears sucked. (5-8) Chicago Bears at
(7-6) Baltimore Ravens

Led by Ray Lewis and Ed Reed, the Baltimore defense thrives on shutting down the run and confusing the opposing quarterback into throwing interceptions. This will be their lucky day, as our offense excels at running the ball poorly and turning it over. *Update: The Ravens will be without safety Ed Reed and receiver Mark Clayton.* Regardless of the outcome, I would like to see Lovie Smith let some of his younger talent on the field just so we know what we might have for next season. (Juaquin Iglesias anyone?) Seeing as how many reports have Smith returning for the 2010 campaign, I wouldn't think that's too much to ask. Though so far Lovie's been focused on trying to win meaningless games and not the future.

(9-0) Indianapolis Colts at (5-4) Baltimore Ravens

After what we saw last Sunday night, do you think the Ravens offense could match output with Peyton Manning and a team of high-schoolers? Manning was shut down for three quarters before exploding in the fourth frame. The Ravens can't afford to forget about Ray Rice and the running game, or they'll simply have no chance. Keeping Manning on the sideline is the only way to win.

(4-4) Baltimore Ravens 7

So the Bengals are 4-0 in their division. Who saw that coming? Joe Flacco was less than his usual efficient self while Carson Palmer aired it out enough to win. The real difference maker was the running game. Baltimore’s Ray Rice only carried the ball 12 times for 48 yards while Cedric Benson garnered 117 yards on 34 carries. Benson definitely grinded it out, but he’s had two 100+ yard rushing days against the Ravens defense. That can’t be ignored. Also hard to miss is that Bengals defense. Yikes.

With the Ravens, Bengals and Steelers all making a case for their place atop the AFC North, this game will go a long way in deciding the final two. If Baltimore is swept by Cincinnati, they’ll drop back to .500 while the Bengals and Steelers fight it out. The Ravens dominated Denver in the second half of last week’s game, thanks to Joe Flacco’s efficiency with the football. He’ll need a repeat performance if he’s going to keep up with Carson Palmer, who is playing on a Pro Bowl level. 21 January 2009

Now it is time to see if their storybook season has a perfect ending.

Pittsburgh Steelers 23, Baltimore Ravens 14

Even though Baltimore closed the gap to 16-14 in the fourth quarter, this one never felt in doubt. The Steelers jumped out to a 13-0 lead early in the second and never looked back on their way to Tampa. The Ravens were not their usual selves, turning it over four times. The most debilitating mistake was Joe Flacco’s third and final interception, taken back 40 yards to the house by Troy Polamalu to stave off a possible Raven comeback. Flacco and the offense had only turned it over once in the two prior playoff contests while forcing nine from their opponents. Flacco finally faltered in his third post-season outing, completing only 13 passes to five different receivers. The Steelers took a page out of Baltimore’s playbook, never letting the Ravens get easy field position due to a turnover. Ben Roethlisberger may only have completed 16 of his 33 pass attempts, but he made plays when it mattered, hitting Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes for big yardage. As anemic as Pittsburgh’s offense was, Baltimore had even more trouble moving the ball. Flacco may be the long term answer, but he still has a way to go before he is capable of winning games on his own. The Steelers defense brought the pressure, sacking Flacco three times en route to the victory. John Harbaugh should be proud of his team’s turnaround in his first season as head coach but will now have to worry about Ray Lewis’ impending free agency. Losing Lewis could be disastrous to that defense’s morale. Running back Willis McGahee took what can only be called a “wicked shot” from Steeler safety Ryan Clark in the fourth quarter and was carted off the field, but he is expected to make a full recovery. Pittsburgh gets to play one more time, only it will be on neutral ground versus a warm-weather team in the Cardinals. It will be Pittsburgh’s defense against Arizona’s offense in the final game (of any significance that is, silly Pro Bowl) of the year.

I have many friends who are Ravens fans including my younger brother who was a member of the Baltimore Ravens’ marching band (and he may be a part of them again in the near future.)  He was, even if it was somewhat obliquely, a “Raven.”   He and I spend just about every Raven’s game texting back and forth.  He’s too young to really remember the Raven’s success of the early 2000’s.  He had just turned 9 when the Raven’s won the Super Bowl and all he really remembers about it is me (a lifelong Giants fan) fuming for most of the game and storming out when it was over.  So for his sake, I like to see the Ravens win.

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers, CBS, 6:30 PM (ET)

For John Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens, the third time better be the charm. When they kick off Sunday evening for the AFC Championship, it will be the third time these division rivals have faced-off this season. The Steelers won both of the previous meetings by a combined seven points, so expect another close one at Heinz Field. “Big Ben” Roethlisberger and “Fast” Willie Parker (totally creative nicknames, right?) will lead the offensive charge against the second ranked defense in the NFL, second only to, you guessed it, the Steelers. Points will be a premium with these great defenses, and turnovers will be the best way to set up scores. Each team places a strong emphasis on establishing the run, so whatever offense line can impose their will on the opposing front seven will aid their title aspirations tremendously. However, in this writer’s humble opinion, it will be a play or two downfield to a wide receiver that ultimately decides what team continues their march. Each defense is tremendously aggressive because they have ball-hawking safeties to protect against the deep ball. Baltimore’s Ed Reed and Pittsburgh’s Troy Polamalu are the best safeties in the league, but even they are susceptible to a deep throw one or twice a game. Reed led the league in interceptions, so accuracy will be integral to any throw in his area, as will the pre-snap reads to determine where he’ll be. Polamalu, on the other hand, may not be his quickest with a strained calf muscle. Beating him deep with a double move or a speedy fly route could put seven points on the board if it begins with a play action fake. Rookie Joe Flacco has a big enough arm, but he’ll need one of his receivers to make it happen. Flacco hasn’t been asked to do much in the playoffs, despite Baltimore-loyal proclaiming his greatness. I suspect he’ll be kept under 20 attempts if the game is kept close on the scoreboard. Roethlisberger will get more of a chance to dissect the Ravens secondary, but only if he’s protected sufficiently by his offensive line. An upright and mobile Roethlisberger has the ability to win any game at any time, so Tomlin better keep him that way. Watch for a field goal in the last few minutes of regulation to decide who heads to Tampa.

I get you ready right here, right now.

Baltimore Ravens at Tennessee Titans, CBS, Saturday 4:30 PM (ET)

Week five’s meeting between the Titans and Ravens was a defensive struggle, with Tennessee winning 13-10. Kerry Collins was a mere manager of the game while rookie Joe Flacco was finding his way early in his first season as a pro. This time around things are much different, as Collins has proved his ability to fling it when necessary and Flacco has completed his first regular season in impressive fashion. There are plenty of similarities between these two squads. They both feature a strong dose of running the ball on offense while stopping the run on defense, and their rankings in those categories correlate. Baltimore ranks 4th in rushing and 2nd in overall defense, while Tennessee ranks 7th in both. Each team’s passing game is suspect (Tennessee is at 27, while Baltimore sits right behind at 28), so there won’t be too many plays to be made through the air. I may trust Collins more than I trust Flacco, but the Ravens defense is too scary to ignore. Honestly though, can I really pick a rookie head coach in John Harbaugh over the wily veteran Jeff Fisher? This one is a “pick-em.” You can’t go wrong either way. Just sit back and watch a game that is sure to hearken back to the league’s olden days.

Drew Brees won the AP Offensive Player of the Year award.  I can’t argue with that pick.  Anytime you come within a deep out route of Dan Marino’s single season passing record, you can be the Offensive POY.Mike Smith was Coach of the Year.  I can’t argue there either.  Any of the successful rookie head coaches, Smith, Sparano, and Harbaugh, could have won this award.  Smith had the toughest situation before the season started and led the Falcons to the playoffs.  The Patriots franchised Matt Cassell.  That was a no-brainer.  Sure, on the surface, $29 million next year for two quarterbacks seems steep.  But the salary cap is going up about $28 million next year.  Take away the $14 million they are giving Cassell and this still have about $14 million more to spend next year than they did this year.  They sure up the most important position on the offense.  Plus, if they trade him they get a 1st and 3rd round pick.  Who knows, there may be a team out there that is only a good QB away from going to the next level.  Hello Buffalo? (And if you think the Pats won’t let Cassell go to Buffalo talk to Lawyer Milloy or Drew Bledsoe.)Did you see Lil’ Wayne on 1st and 10 on ESPN2?  When I heard he was going to be on I set-up the DVR because I had to watch.  Get this….he was really good.  He knows his sports.  His points were lucid and made lots of sense.  He made some statements that were bold and polarizing, which is what you want out of a talking-head.  I must say this though.  Skip Bayless said he loves Lil’ Wayne’s music and thinks Tha Carter III is Weezy’s Purple Rain.  Am I to believe Bayless really listens to hip-hop?  No offense Skip, but you are probably most buttoned up lily white person on ESPN’s roster.  If you’re not, you are in the team photo with Woody Paige and Marty Smith.

ival may save Norv Turner’s job, but they’re still just an 8-8 team, playoffs or not.

Baltimore Ravens (11-5) at Miami Dolphins (11-5)

Miami’s regular season turn-around from 2007 is nothing short of amazing. A 1-15 team a year ago, the Dolphins have won the AFC East and are hosting a playoff game. Chad Pennington is the comeback player of the year for the second time in his career, but he will need to do more than just manage the offense against the stout Raven defense. Linebacker Ray Lewis may be the heart and soul of the Ravens, but safety Ed Reed is the playmaker. Reed has come through in clutch moments in so many games throughout his career, and his talents have propelled Baltimore into the post-season. With their defense, the Ravens are possibly the most intimidating team in the playoffs. Rookie quarterback Joe Flacco has exceeded expectations by bringing a semblance of offense back to Baltimore and turning a glaring weakness into only a slight weakness. He’ll need to stay on top of his game to avoid linebacker Joey Porter, who has made his name this season by putting the hurt on opposing quarterbacks. The real question coming out of Miami is how the Dolphins offense will perform versus the Ravens D. If Pennington can sustain drives with his precision passing and keep turnovers to a minimum like he did all season, the Dolphins have a real chance to keep their Cinderella season alive.

This game is just as big as last Sunday night against the Giants. The Ravens also have a lot to play for as they try for an AFC wild card bid. If the Ravens defense has their way, they'll have Romo on his heels. But who do I think will win this game? Good question. I pick Dallas. They just have too much talent. Baltimore has a lot to play for, but Dallas is Dallas. I pick Dallas! I think Romo and co will find a way....any way to win against Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Joe Flacco and company on Saturday night in the last game played at Texas Stadium.

Week sixteen’s Opening Drive begins right now!

Baltimore Ravens (9-5) at Dallas Cowboys (9-5)

As each team sits at a 9-5 logjam with other wildcard hopefuls, Saturday night's contest will go a long way in fulfilling their postseason aspirations. The main difference is that while Dallas is in contention for either wild card slot, Baltimore is fighting for only one, as Indianapolis will likely end up with the fifth seed. Dallas made a “Giant” statement by beating the NFC’s best last Sunday night and can’t afford a let-down versus the Ravens. Tony Romo is assured a few bad throws, but if he can put up enough points the Ravens won’t be able to recover. Joe Flacco is looking to rebound from a terrible showing against Pittsburgh, needing a big game to outscore the Dallas offense. The Ravens’ defense won’t have much room for error, as their offense will not explode against a stout Dallas defensive front.

Last year, the Cowboys sent 13 players to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl.  Granted, a few of those players made it by name alone, but for the most part they deserved it.  When you go 13-3, as the Cowboys did last year, you tend to get a lot of coattail votes.  This year the ‘Boys will be sending only 5 players.

necessary victory to stay ahead of the Chicago Bears who won on Thursday.

Pittsburgh Steelers 13, Baltimore Ravens 9

In such an important match-up where a division title is on the line, it’s such a shame it was decided by instant replay. Santonio Holmes’ catch at the goal line was initially ruled down at the 3 inch line or so, but was subject to a booth review where it was apparently clear enough to be called a touchdown. The replays are inconclusive at best, and are not even close to providing the “indisputable evidence” that NFL rules state are needed to overturn a field ruling. Pittsburgh would have faced a fourth down had the original call stood, forcing a key decision by Mike Tomlin to either go for the win or the tie. Joe Flacco completed only 11 of his 28 pass attempts and threw two interceptions, proving why the Steeler defense is ranked number one in the NFL. Baltimore still has a good shot at the post-season, but they’re behind Indianapolis and tied with the three 9-5 teams in the AFC East. They’ll need to win out and get some help.

I have to give where credit is due. I have made no secret about my unyielding criticism of Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger. I have pointed out time and time again, Roethlisberger is not playing "up to snuff" this season and has not earned his $100 million paycheck. I've called him out more than a few occasions and even labeled him "Big Bend" for his propensity to hold onto the ball too long and expose himself to countless sacks.

(Unless you turn it over five times as well, but you get my drift.)

Baltimore Ravens 24, Washington Redskins 10

I’d stop throwing the football anywhere near Ravens safety Ed Reed. With his two interceptions of Jason Campbell Sunday night he may have single-handedly kicked the ‘Skins out of the playoffs while propelling his own team into January. Clinton Portis was on the sidelines for most of the second half, and has since lashed out at head coach Jim Zorn’s decision. The Ravens defense put the All-Pro back on lockdown and forced three turnovers from the normally protective Washington offense. Zorn’s Redskins may end up on the bottom of the NFC East after all. Baltimore is set up perfectly for a post-season berth and will be a dangerous opponent for whoever is unfortunate enough to face them.

9 December 2008

Another week is in the books in the National Football League as we head to Week 15. But first let's take a look back at the week that was...Week 14! (my tongue is getting twisted) Several surprising outcomes this past Sunday including a few of the games I picked. I went a disappointing 1-3 in my picks. Very poor performance on my part. I'm finally realizing I'll never have a grip on the NFL. It's the most inconsistent professional sport out there. Any team can lose on any given week. But enough sulking, let's get on to this week's Fallout Report!

25 November 2008

Chad Pennington looks to be a stable presence in their huddle for the foreseeable future.

Baltimore Ravens 36, Philadelphia Eagles 7

The real story coming out of this blowout loss was the benching of All-Pro Eagles QB Donovan McNabb at halftime. McNabb did not play especially well, going 8 for 18 with 2 interceptions. Even with those struggles, the Eagles were only behind 10-7 at the break. Kevin Kolb started the second half and failed to put any points on the board, throwing two interceptions of his own, including one in the end zone that was returned 108 yards for a touchdown by Ed Reed. Whether it was Kolb’s inefficiency or the Ravens’ smothering defense or a mixture of the two that led to the offensive woes, Coach Andy Reid has already named McNabb the starter for Thursday night’s game against the Cardinals. It will be the last gasp for Philly, if they haven’t suffocated already.

tell Parcells that though, he still expects to make the playoffs.

Philadelphia Eagles (5-4-1) at Baltimore Ravens (6-4)

So if the Eagles could only manage a tie with the one-win Bengals, how are they supposed to hang with an AFC North resident that owns six victories? This season has been very troubling to Eagles fans, as everyone wanted to believe they were poised for a return to greatness. Injuries to Brian Westbrook and Shaun Andrews have caused problems, but the Eagles just aren’t playing well regardless. When they don’t make the playoffs at 8-8 or 9-7, things could get messier than eating a Philly Cheesesteak.

Expect a Matt Schaub-sized contract.

New York Giants 30, Baltimore Ravens 10

The Giants are continually showing the NFL why they are the best, handily beating their opponents. Tennessee may be undefeated, but they’ve had too many close calls to be dominant. Tom Coughlin’s three-headed running attack racked up over 200 yards on the ground, punishing a fantastic Ravens defensive unit. In the NFC, they are certainly head and shoulders above the rest.

acker Adalius Thomas may be too much for a defense that doesn’t have any room for mistakes.

Baltimore Ravens (6-3) at New York Giants (8-1)

Rookie Joe Flacco is winning over fans simply by winning. With the hype coming out of Cleveland, no one expected a rookie head coach and quarterback tandem to share the AFC North lead after ten weeks. The Ravens defense is as stout as ever, ranking second in the NFL, proving that aging doesn’t always coincide with regressing.

/> Last Week's Record: 2-2

*Classic NFL Films music hits*

1) Baltimore Ravens @ Houston Texans

Last time I checked this was a pick-em in Vegas. The Ravens rough and tough defense heads into Houston to battle the Texans at Reliant Stadium. Houston will be without starting quarterback Matt Schaub for up to a month or beyond with a torn MCL suffered in last week's game against the Minnesota Vikings. Back up Sage Rosenfels will get the call and before I make a prediction for this game. While I was watching the Broncos/Browns game on Thursday night. They showed a graphic for the AFC Playoff Picture and crazy enough...I saw the Texans logo! A long shot, but hey it's Week 10. Still 7 more weeks of football to be played. I'm going to go with the homer pick and pick the Texans here. If this game was being played in Baltimore, I would pick the Ravens in a heartbeat but the Texans have played good at home.

fighting for a share of the division lead or sole possession of first place after week ten.

Baltimore Ravens (4-3) at Cleveland Browns (3-4)

Ravens rookie quarterback Joe Flacco certainly hasn’t lit up the league with his play, but he has kept his mistakes to a minimum for the most part. Last week he even caught a 43-yard pass from back-up quarterback Troy Smith. Flacco has his Ravens at an impressive 4-3 and ready to gain ground on the AFC North leading Steelers, who face the Redskins in Washington. If Baltimore can take care of business, they could be sitting pretty tied with the Steelers in first place with another meeting to come in week fifteen.

I pick the Cowboys in this one.

Winners - Dallas Cowboys

2) Baltimore Ravens @ Miami Dolphins

One team is coming off a blowout loss while the other lost in the closing seconds. Honestly...this was a tough pick. Do you go with the team that got stomped last week or the team that barely loss? It's a toughie. I'm going to go with the gut though and pick the Ravens. Baltimore's defense will prevail here. Might be an ugly low-scoring dragout of a game. Flacco needs to not turn the ball over to give the defense and the rest of the team some breathing room. This is a game either team can take on paper, but like I said I pick Baltimore in this. Now I hope I'm right.
