When the fight between welterweights Joshua Clottey and Zab Judah ended in the middle of the ninth round, it was for the wrong reason. Judah had suffered a significant cut over his right eye, which had at first been ruled as being caused by an accidental head-butt. The ringside doctor gave Judah a visual test, which Judah failed several times, and thus was ruled to be unable to continue. As Clottey has a disqualification on his record for that very reason, it would seem a likely explanation. Though as a quality replay from HBO would show, the cut was definitively caused by a short Clottey punch. Judah was the flashier of the two, but never proved to be any real danger to Joshua. Clottey had been landing the more powerful punches all night, and his cut-inducing punch was good evidence to that fact.

He was also the #1 pound for pound fighter in the sport. Despite rumors that he was ducking fellow Welterweight Miguel Cotto and the fact that he had a highly lucrative fight planned in a rematch with Oscar De La Hoya, Mayweather left the sport and hasn’t looked back yet. Whether or not you believe that Mayweather will stay retired is irrelevant. The true fact of the matter is this. Mayweather is no longer the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world, he is no longer a champion, and he is (for the near future) no longer in the picture. Where does that leave the Welterweight Division? The division in which he left behind.

Lakers fans will tell you that the Lakers haven’t hit their stride. That Kobe isn’t playing the same way that he was in the first three series. That he isn’t moving the ball. That he’s taking too many bad shots. They say that Lamar Odom is struggling through nerves and that Pau Gasol is playing soft.
