Brett Favre

24 January 2010

Are you ready for two weeks of hype for a Brett Favre versus Peyton Manning Super Bowl?

Well TOO FREAKING BAD! The Saints were having none of it today. And what a coincidence that in a year marred by missed field goals, it was on the leg of lesser-known Saints kicker Garrett Hartley that the Saints earned a spot in their first ever Super Bowl with a 31-28 win over the Vikings.

Tony Romo turned the ball over three times en route to an embarrassing 34-3 loss to Brett Favre and the Vikings.

The beleaguered Dallas star regressed tremendously from the cautiously efficient QB he became in the latter half of the regular season and last week's win over Philly. Two first half fumbles put the Cowboys in a deep hole. As bad as Romo was, Favre was just the opposite, throwing three TD's to Sidney Rice and another late to Visanthe Shiancoe without tossing a single interception. Needing to complete only 15 passes, Favre relied heavily on his stout defense and a running game that was consistent while not spectacular. Adrian Peterson carried the ball 22 times for a meager 59 yards but kept the defense honest along with back-up Chester Taylor. Dallas did not have that luxury.

1:00PM ET FOX

I don't know if you knew, but Brett Favre is a Viking. Back for one last (?) Super Bowl run, Favre has done all Minnesota has asked him. Now its time for his team to show up. That means blocking for Adrian Peterson and the secondary showing up to play. Hopefully Brad Childress did some coaching this week,

Though it means nothing, I am required by football law to point out I was 7-0 in my Opening Drive predictions for week 17. Woot. Multiple teams lost because they did not keep their starters in while one NFC East leader got railed on. Now, onto the last week of the regular season with this edition of the Final Drive!

Seriously. Take that Brett Favre. Hope you enjoy playing the first weekend of the playoffs because you just lost out on the number two seed in the NFC.

Monday night's shocking overtime win over the much ballyhooed Vikings gave Bear fans something to cheer about at the end of this massively disappointing season. Minnesota came out flat as can be while Chicago started quickly, something they have rarely done in 2009. There were a few too many injuries for the Bears, as Charles Tillman, Israel Idonije, Danieal Manning and Johnny Knox all went down at one time or another.

Carson Palmer did not break the 100-yard passing mark while Brett Favre let his defense do all the heavy-lifting. If Childress can give Favre some rest in the next few weeks, Minnesota will be in prime playoff position, even if they can't catch the Saints.

Green Bay, Wisconsin, aka Titletown, USA. Land of Lombardi, start of a Legend (Brett Favre) and home of brats, burgers, cheese and beer. I've done three half marathons (1 in Madison, 1 in Green Bay, and 1 in Appleton). I loved Madison because of the college memories but last year they had a lot of complaints because of the course and lack of porta potties (interestingly, a key thing on runs). Green Bay was awesome because it started and ended near Lambeau; the start was outside on a street and you finished by running out the player's tunnel and onto the field for 1 lap. If you think of all the things that have happened and all the people that have touched the field.. its a surreal feeling. I almost floated around the field, on top of the world. I guess it's part of the sreason it was my best run, huh?

p>(5-2) Pittsburgh Steelers 27
(6-1) Minnesota Vikings 17

It’s about time I see Brett Favre being Brett Favre. That fourth quarter fumble and tipped pass/interception cost the Vikings another comeback win and an undefeated season. For shame. You should probably run Adrian Peterson more and stop 40-year old Favre from passing 51 times. Just a thought. Without Antoine Winfield, the Vikings’ secondary and run support is nowhere near as intimidating. Ben Ben and the Steelers are back in the division running after troubles the first weeks of the season. Troy Polamalu is all the difference in the Pittsburgh D.

They welcome in the still streaking Vikings, who are making the rounds on the Brett Favre victory tour. Polamalu practiced this week and is expected to play, which should healthily improve the Steelers’ run and pass defense. Against Favre and Adrian Peterson, they’ll need Troy at his best. With Ben Roethlisberger coming off a 400-yard passing game of his own and Vikings Pro Bowl corner Antoine Winfield doubtful with a foot injury, this has potential to turn into a shoot-out.

o;t anyone beat the Vikings?! Steven Hauschka’s missed 44-yard field goal keeps the legend of Brett Favre in Minnesota going strong for another week. Who thought that the Baltimore defense would be the team’s weakness this season? They don’t deserve to be called “good” with the amount of points they’re allowing. Take that Ray Lewis.

-2) Baltimore Ravens at (5-0) Minnesota Vikings In one of the better match-ups of the weekend, Brett Favre and the undefeated Vikes get their toughest challenge to date when the surely fuming Ravens come to town. I don’t know if I can imagine that team after losing three straight. I’d be scared. Still, Minnesota has a stout defense of its own. Favre and Joe Flacco need to protect the ball because each offense excels at cashing in on turnovers. Man I hope the Ravens win.

Green Bay Packers (2-1) at Minnesota Vikings (3-0)

Can this hype get any bigger? Brett Favre’s former flame comes to town to face their old quarterback and his newfound Minnesotan lover. Aaron Rodgers should be just fine, Brett’ll hand off to Adrian Peterson quite a bit, but I wonder how Green Bay will play on defense? Daring Favre to beat you by stacking the line of scrimmage may work, but it might result in public backlash if Favre throws the Vikes to victory. Either way, I’m sitting down Monday night and rooting for Green Bay as hard as I can.

veland’s own quarterback drama will be outweighed by the incoming team’s signal-caller. Brett Favre on the Vikings will be a never-ending story until it well… finally ends. But who knows when that will be? With a stout defense anchored by Kevin and Pat Williams (who apparently will not be suspended), all Favre has to do is not make mistakes. Handing off to Adrian Peterson is the best recipe for his success. His experience and threat of downfield passing could be enough to get the Vikings to the postseason.

The NFL’s oldest rivalry opens up a new chapter at Lambeau Field this Sunday, November 16, 2008. Entitled “After Favre,” this new plot twist leaves fans of both teams anxious but uncertain as to what will unfold in this classic tale. One thing they can expect to see is Kyle Orton under center for the visiting Chicago Bears. After missing the loss against the Titans with an ankle injury, Orton will try and keep his team in first place with a win over the Packers.

I'm still confused. How did Brett Favre, living legend and America's old-school Wrangler-wearin' tough guy get bullied into going to the worst possible destination?

I have to give credit (for simply the tactic, not the stance) of Green Bay's front office for stone-walling Favre and not simply acquiescing to his wishes. It seemed very likely that Brett would be headed to Tampa Bay, and the Jets had no shot. That's what everyone, including myself, were thinking when we realized he was done in Green Bay. Tampa was going to be the best fit for Brett, since he was never going to get traded to Minnesota or the barely mentioned Chicago Bears. I fully expected to see Brett flex his legend-muscles during trade negotiations to make sure he didn't end up as second-fiddle in the AFC East division. But it never happened. Favre was obviously tired of this whole debacle and simply wanted to get into a camp so he could play the game he loved (yet said he didn't want to play anymore only a few months ago).

And 2, everything I wrote about the Jets when I was writing about them means nothing now. Oh well. Its football, it happens. The Packers are one of my favorite teams, so lets get started.

ld a candle.  It kind of makes me long for the days of old.

Which is why I can’t fault Brett Favre for his decision to return to football.  These athletes that we write about, particularly the elite, are like no creatures we’ll ever truly understand.  They are the best of the best and as we’ve seen over the years, have difficulty hanging them up when their time has come.  How many athletes, guys as tough as nails, have we seen break down into tears, sobbing like newborn babies at their retirement press conferences?  One need only recollect a glassy-eyed Mike Schmidt or John Elway at the podium, reaching unsuccessfully for that next word with their hearts in their throats.

However, there have been rumblings that Brett Favre could become a member of the Buccs this year. This Brett Favre situation has got me annoyed and I didn’t want to talk about it, but the fact is, he may become a Bucc, he also may become a Jet. We don’t know where Favre is going to end up, but should he end up in Tampa Bay, this team automatically becomes a top playoff contender. Favre can win, we all know that, but can he win with this team? We’ll have to wait and see how it all unfolds.

I was very surprised by this controversy. Seeing Favre's tearful retirement press conference back in March made me think of how the Gunslinger Era is over in the NFL. Five years from now, Favre would give his Hall of Fame speech in Canton, Ohio. For now, Favre's day would revolve around fishing, playing golf, serving as a football consultant of sorts and answering questions like "What in the heck was Jerry Glanville* thinking when he traded you to the Green Bay Packers for a first-round pick that, just a few years later, was out of football?"

I should say something about Brett Favre, here, too, but I’m sure the 24-hour sports outlets will have that covered for the next, oh, few weeks or so. Personally, I’m still not completely sold. I mean, he was in the NFC Championship game last year. There’s lots of talent on that team, and with the North being so weak, they could easily repeat the kind of run they enjoyed in ’07. I’ll leave this parting figure:

Despite his decision to retire today, Brett Favre is likely to play quarterback in the NFL before all is said and done. Citing mental exhaustion as the primary motivating factor, Favre is leaving the game after having made 253 consecutive regular season starts (275 including playoffs). Not surprisingly, Favre is mentally exhausted, but physically he's still got it. Which leads one to conclude that after a suitable mental Sabbatical period has ensued, Favre will be back and playing QB for somebody, somewhere.

NFL Playoffs!? That can only mean one thing – bandwagon season! Now that my team #1 and #2 are done for the season, its time to jump on the way only a true NFL football fan can.

My Tampa Bay Buccaneers played an exceptional first quarter today and then decided to fall asleep on me. Too bad the game has four quarters! Argh!
