) Chicago Bears 37
(6-3) Detroit Lions 13

On Detroit’s opening drive, it looked as if Calvin Johnson was on his way to a monster game, catching three passes on that series. However, on his third catch, Julius Peppers absolutely mauled Johnson, forcing a fumble that Brian Urlacher brought back to the Lion 30. A multitude of Matt Forte runs and a Kyle Vanden Bosch late hit penalty set up the Bears at the six, where Forte took it in to give his team a lead they would never relinquish. A Tim Jennings forced fumble gave the Bears their second possession, on which Cutler found Earl Bennett on their way to Robbie Gould’s first field goal. After Lance Briggs wrapped up Matthew Stafford during an incompletion, Devin Hester brought back the punt 30 yards to the Chicago 48, foreshadowing his next punt return. After an 82 yard run up the sidelines off what seemed like the Lions’ ninth punt of the game, Devin Hester made it 20-0 with fourteen minutes left in the second quarter and sucked the life out of the Lions. From there the defense pinned their ears back and the line went after Stafford as the corners sat on his throws.

Time for revenge! Following their ugly Monday night loss to the Lions in week five, the Bears have won three in a row and are nipping at the heels of Detroit in the NFC North standings. If the Bears win they’ll be tied with Detroit for second in the NFC North and in prime position for the first Wildcard slot come playoff time. Let’s break down this incredibly important contest.

lay, found themselves on the crap-end of two monster plays, a 73 yard bomb from Matthew Stafford to Calvin Johnson in the first quarter and an 88 yard run by Jahvid Best in the third. If we just knock those two plays off the record, then the Bears defense was pretty good. But I can’t do that. Chris Harris played like the other inexperienced safeties on the roster, missing a grand chance at a tackle-for-loss early in the game and then losing track of Best on his TD scamper. Runs like that can be stopped if you just play disciplined gap-control defense. Charles Tillman didn’t redirect

The Lion offense is too good. How many heart attacks will Joe suffer?

Six plus. Calvin Johnson TD’s/Ndamukong Suh sacks will account for the majority.Message to the Bears:

This is the first of two consecutive nationally televised games. Don’t eff it up. Please.

In the secondary, the Bears kept Calvin Johnson and the other receivers in check until the Lions' final drive. However, it is after a Lance Briggs-caused turnover that I found the most troubling moment of the day.

Where the Bears will see issues is in pass coverage. With Calvin Johnson, Nate Burleson and Bryant Johnson at receiver and Brandon Pettigrew at tight end, the Lions are going to get yards in chunks. If the Bears hold true to their corner depth chart, Zack Bowman should match-up with Johnson and Burleson will see Tillman across the line. If safety Danieal Manning gets Pettigrew duty, look out.

Add them to the freakish Calvin Johnson and second-year tight end Brandon Pettigrew and you have the makings of a 28-points-a-game offense. Rookie Jahvid Best may be the kind of running back the Lions haven't seen since Barry Sanders, but the offensive line is still suspect. Trading for guard Rob Sims from Seattle helps bolster the interior, but Jeff Backus is a serviceable left tackle at best in a division with Julius Peppers and Jared Allen. Whoops.

If they can, it shouldn't be difficult keeping the lowly Lions under 17 points. Calvin Johnson will get 100 yards in receiving today. Take that to the bank. That should be more than low en

Matthew Stafford routinely found Calvin Johnson all over the field, including a 54-yarder on the first play of the game. A 61-yard Matt Forte run set up an Elway-like helicopter dive from Jay Cuter into the endzone. Despite that inspirational score, Detroit struck right back with a 72-yard drive for their second TD.

Charles Tillman should be matched-up with the dynamic Calvin Johnson for most of the game. Tillman is much better-suited against bigger receivers and Johnson certainly is a beast. Zack Bowman’s youth will be pitted against veteran receiver Bryant Johnson, so he should have the speed to make-up for any mistakes. If he plays, Lions running back Kevin Smith will not be 100% due to a shoulder injury, which could give more opportunities for a fumble-forcing defensive unit.

Quarterback Dan Orlovsky found receiver Calvin Johnson six times in the first half, and rookie running back Kevin Smith found the holes in an undisciplined Chicago defensive front. With no pressure in his face, Orlovsky had an easy time going through multiple reads, often getting to his third or fourth option. As bad as the defense was in the first half, they came out in the second and showed the Lions why they’re in first place in the NFC North.

However, with no Roy Williams at receiver, the Bears can focus most of their attention on Calvin Johnson and Mike Furrey, leaving few options for QB Dan Orlovsky. Detroit hasn’t run the b
