Chris Harris

rtant contest.

(6-2) Detroit Lions at
(5-3) Chicago Bears

A lot could be made of Chris Harris’ impact on the Detroit Lions since they claimed him off of waivers, but his impact was probably more significant in preparation and film study than it will be on the field. There was a reason the Bears let him go. He just wasn’t making plays anymore. In their first match-up, the Lion front four made plenty of noise against a developing Bear offensive line. It should be much more of an even playing field today after the improvements that have been made on the line and in the game-planning. Chicago will excel on offense if they can keep Matt Forte on the outside and in space. Detroit’s linebackers are suspect at best in their run defense, so Forte and Marion Barber have to figure heavily in the offensive scheme, regardless of the elements. Ndamukong Suh has been getting a lot of hype this season, but his production has tailed off, especially in his run defense. Expect Barber to run right at Suh just to test his resolve and football acumen. On the outside, all I know is that Earl Bennett needs to be out there as much as possible after the production he showed last week. Devin Hester is active for the Bears, so special teams figures to be its typical explosive self. Cutler has to continue making excellent reads and finding the open man, whoever that may be. Jay’s run of exceptional games has him right knocking at the “elite quarterback” door, so another clutch performance in a big-time environment is just what the pundit ordered.

But I can’t do that. Chris Harris played like the other inexperienced safeties on the roster, missing a grand chance at a tackle-for-loss early in the game and then losing track of Best on his TD scamper. Runs like that can be stopped if you just play disciplined gap-control defense. Charles Tillman didn’t redirect Calvin Johnson to the inside toward the safety on his touchdown, which lead to a complete torching of Harris. Julius Peppers has just been injured on the play before, so the Lions took full advantage of his absence. Johnson ripped the Bears to shreds with 130 yards on only 5 catches. D.J. Moore made a great interception at the end of the first half to ensure the Bears took a surprising lead into the break, but it wasn’t enough. Not getting our pass rush going didn't help either. I’m just about finished with this cover-two defense hooey. (And by that I mean I was done two years ago.)

wing the fourth and final preseason game, the Bears looked more than ready to enter the season with Chris Harris and second-year Major Wright at the safety position. This meant Wright would learn on the job, with missed tackles and assignments sure to come. But then the Patriots cut 2-time Pro Bowler Brandon Meriweather, whom the Bears quickly snapped up. Meriweather should be a starter as soon as he is able, both from a talent perspective as well as the value of his one-year contract. ($2.25 million salary, $1.25 million signing bonus.) He’ll likely displace Wright at free safety, giving the Bears two playmakers in the defensive backfield. Meriweather was a great pick-up at a position of need with little risk involved. It’ll pay dividends this year.

Jay Cutler came alive in an electric third quarter for the offense, but it was a late Chris Harris interception that sealed Chicago’s eleventh win of the season and kept their hopes for the number two seed in the NFC alive.

To start 2010, Daniel Manning will be features at strong safety and the newly re-acquired Chris Harris will start at free safety. Without question, this combo will not last very long. Manning is a mental liability at safety and Harris simply doesn't have the range to play free. He's an in-the-box safety. Major Wright, the Bears' top pick in this latest draft should find his way into a starting role before the fourth game of the season. He has the range and speed necessary and needs to get playing time and experience. Harris at the strong spot and Wright at free is Chicago's best safety duo.

Like I said, shaky at best.

Solidifying the safety spot:

Who's starting the season? Chris Harris at free and Danieal Manning at strong? Major Wright at strong and Chris Harris at free? Who knows with Lovie Smith these days? Smith has never been able to stick with a safety combination, whether it's because of injury or poor play. Manning may be on his last chance at safety (let's hope) while

' secondary and gutted the Panther defense for another starter by trading for veteran strong safety Chris Harris. Harris was the odd man out three years ago in a crowded Chicago secondary and was dealt to the Carolina Panthers for a fifth round pick. Harris broke the news on his twitter account, saying goodbye to Carolina but later back-pedaled when he learned the trade wasn't "official" yet. It has since been finalized by the NFL. The Deal Chicago sent 5th year linebacker Jamar Williams to Carolina for sixth year safety

He just hasn't tried. He doesn't deserve to be on this team.

Chris Harris got cut yesterday. This was a guy that put in a tremendous amount of effort day in and day out and he gets the cut however Steve Francis is still on the team. The main reason Harris was cut was because of the great ball DJ Strawberry and Von Wafer have been playing in the preseason. But seeing Francis still remain with the team and seeing
