Still, with Orton and Chris Simms and plenty of free agents out there as well as numerous draft picks to trade, he has options at the position. Denver’s defense was porous last season, so I would use all of those high picks (they have 5 in the first 3 rounds) to shore up that unit and make do with Orton and Simms.

My solution? Sign Jeff Garcia and give him the starting job. Sign Chris Simms while keeping Orton and Hanie and head into training camp. There, problem solved. The Bears bring new blood into the mix while still developing in-house talent by holding a competition for the back-up spot. I should be a GM.

Possible Solutions:
Chris Simms: The Bears have always liked Simms, and Simms recently commented on having the desire to play in Chicago. He doesn’t have a wealth of experience, but coming back from the ruptured spleen he suffered a few seasons ago is nothing at which to scoff. If nothing else Simms would provide another young arm to groom in case Orton isn’t the man for the long-term.
