Releases

Tight End Desmond Clark

There’s been a bit of uproar on this front, similar to the Kreutz release. Let me clear this one up for you Bear fans: it’s not that big of a deal. Though he had a poorly timed injury in the preseason game against Tennessee, that’s not why he was cut. (Though it probably didn’t help.) Clark has long since lost his ability to immediately impact the offense and was now being kept around merely as a third-string back-up and player-coach to Kellen Davis, the new starter. Unfortunately for Clark, your third tight end has to contribute to special teams, an activity for which Clark is too long in the tooth. That’s why the Bears feel more comfortable with rookie Kyle Adams as their third TE. He can also line up at fullback and H-back, skills that make him extraordinarily useful in the Martz offense. Clark’s tenure with the Bears was a long and moderately successful one, but we have better options on the roster.

Dependable Desmond Clark is technically listed as an H-back, meaning you'll see him (as well as the other TE's) in the backfield in the fullback spot. Clark is still the most versatile of the Bears' tight ends with the ability to block as well as to go out and run routes. Greg Olsen returns after his best season as a Bear with 60 catches and eight touchdowns. His fourth year in the league, many hope Olsen takes a step forward, but it's still unclear how many passes he'll see his way in this system. Regardless, when the Bears hit the redzone, Olsen will see the ball come his way. Free agent Brandon Manumaleuna is like an extra tackle at the end of the line, signed for his blocking prowess, size and knowledge of the Martz offense. Kellen Davis luckily made it onto the roster, but provides excellent size and athleticism at the position.

Long-snapper Patrick Mannelly did not practice all week so tight Desmond Clark stepped in as his back-up to horrible results. Ditka help this team if Mannelly goes down in the regular season during a game. If Mannelly was out all week, why wasn't Clark better prepared by the coaching staff?

Keeping Olsen, Desmond Clark and Manu would make a trio of solid tight ends who can serve a variety of needs. Maybe Dez Clark could be on the move?

Antrell Rolle seems to be out of reach at the moment, so expect for Chicago to look at Ryan Clark out of Pittsburgh.

and reliability make up for his lack of athleticism and speed.

-The Bears are a better team when Desmond Clark is catching passes. While Greg Olsen is a wide receiver in a tight end's body, Clark is a better blocker and has been the Bears' most consistent receiver over the past four or five years. Injuries kept him out of action a bit this season, but I hope we can see Clark and Olsen in two tight-end sets for a few more years.

Thankfully, tight end Desmond Clark is expected to return to action on Sunday, lessening the burden on Olsen’s shoulders.

For the offensive line, an emphasis should be placed on opening up holes for Matt Forte and the running game. Their lack of cohesiveness has shown through three games, as the Bears are only averaging 71 yards on the ground per contest. With Cutler under center, there should be plenty of room to run if their blocks are executed properly. (That goes for you too Olsen.) Fortunately, Detroit’s big defensive tackle Grady Jackson is listed as questionable with a knee injury. At 345 pounds, he’s not an easy man to move around.

With tight end Desmond Clark out with a rib injury, Greg Olsen will be the focal point of the defense for the second straight week. He’ll see plenty of double coverage unless a wide receiver can alter their thinking. Kellen Davis will be sliding into that second tight end spot, giving a bigger and younger alternative to Clark.

On throws aimed to Desmond Clark and Hester, you could see the quarterback skill and arm strength for which the Bears traded. Looking off receivers and whipping tight spirals were little snippets of the offense to come. Little effort was made to establish the run, so back-up tailbacks Kevin Jones and Garrett Wolfe did not provide significant contributions.

es during the season, DON”T KICK IT TO DEVIN HESTER!!! The tight end position is headlined by Desmond Clark and Greg Olsen. Clark is a long time Bears tight end and will most likely get the ball, but Olsen is looking better and better each game and I believe he will play a big part in the Bear’s offense this year.
