Final Drive

10 January 2011

Hm. That’s my general reaction to Wildcard Weekend in the NFL. The playoffs got started with what is unquestionably one of the biggest upsets in recent memory, which was followed up by a drama-filled finish in Indianapolis. Sunday saw a drilling in Kansas City and a comeback story ended early in Philly. Here’s the story behind the first round of the NFL playoffs.(8-9) Seattle Seahawks 41

Who stepped up in week 16 action and who fell flat? Let's start the Final Drive! (7-8) St. Louis Rams 25
(5-10) San Francisco 49ers 17

Well, at 5-10 the Niners didn’t exactly have the break-out year everyone expected them to. I was wary of the hype, but I certainly didn’t think they’d fall off the face of the NFC West. Despite the firing of Mike Singletary after the loss, the real story is Sam Bradford and the St. Louis Rams. They’ve put themselves in a position to win the NFC West by beating the Seahawks next week. Bradford is fighting over the rookie hurdle and giving hope for the future.(5-10) Detroit Lions 34

It's time for the Final Drive!

(9-3) New Orleans Saints 34
(2-10) Cincinnati Bengals 30

While the Bengals fought valiantly to take the lead late, their complete inability to run the ball or to stop Drew Brees at any point is the reason they dropped their tenth of the year. Right after seeing the Bengals wipe away his lead, Brees calmly stepped out on the field and marched it right down to the red zone, where Bengal DT Pat Sims decided to give him a gift by jumping off-sides on a fourth and two play that would have never been run. Dumb plays like that are why the Bengals aren’t going to the playoffs and why Marvin Lewis should get fired.

ic ending out in Cincinnati, let’s take a look around the league in this first edition of the Final Drive!

Minnesota Vikings 34, Cleveland Browns 20

For Brad Childress’ sake, this should be the formula for every Vikings game this season. All Favre has to do is throw a downfield pass every now and again in between hand-offs to Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor. Short accurate passes to Viking playmakers will keep this offense balanced.
