base).

Yesterday, despite a slow start, the Astros were able to get a solo 5th inning home run by Hunter Pence and a two-run sixth-inning homer by Carlos Lee to beat the Rays 3-2. Rays pitcher Scott Kazmir, with the loss dropped to 6-3 on the season with a 2.03 ERA. Wow, Houston beat a pitcher, and a good one at that. Kazmir gave up four hits and three earned runs in the game to go with two walks and seven strikeouts. Until the fifth inning, he had allowed no runs.

He walked a hitter and struck out six.

In another corner we have Hunter Pence, the Houston Astros' outfielder who hit two solo homers, raising his season batting average to .294--after having gotten off to a horrible start.

mber Nine...

For some abstract reason, that infamous Beatles song reminds me of Astros outfielder Hunter Pence, who wears jersey number nine.

Pence used his second career grandslam--an opposite field line drive--to propel the Astros past the Chicago Cubs 4-2 in the second game of their series. Houston, which had been near the bottom of the cellar earlier in the season, is now 26-21 on the season and in second place. The Cubs, who this year will celebrate their dubious 100th year anniversary since their last World Series victory, are still in first place.

Hunter Pence, in a leadoff role today, went 2-4 with a double and a run scored. He’s now hitting .268 on the season and is starting to really put a considerable deal of distance between himself and the dreaded Mendoza Line that he was under earlier.

He gave up 10 hits, eight earned runs, walked one and struck out five.

Hunter Pence continued to show signs of getting out of his slump as he went 3-4 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. He’s now up to .256. It’s also looking more and more like a good idea to have Matsui lead off. Matty went 1-5, but he also scored a run, drove in two runs and drew a walk. He’s hitting .308 on the season. Carlos Lee added two doubles.

Kaz Matsui went 2 for 5, scoring two runs, and Hunter Pence was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Lance Berkman also homered for Houston.

gave up a hit and a walk but no earned runs.

Yes, Astros killer Todd Helton got a hit and Hunter Pence had only one hit (granted, he scored the tying run). Hopefully, Houston can ride this momentum.

Yes, it's a little discouraging that last year's Rookie of the Year candidate Hunter Pence is off to a .180 start. I like to think he'll break out of his slump soon and st

ck most of their core.  Lance Berkman, Kaz Matsui, Miguel Tejada, Ty Wigginton, Carlos Lee and Hunter Pence lead this very balanced line-up.  The key is the health of Roy Oswalt, as it always is.  This rotation is very thin but if Roy can stay healthy and be a CY Young candidate that will go a long way to helping keep things together.  Wandy Rodriguez, Brandon Backe and Woody Williams just are not going to scare people or cut it as the rest of the rotation.  This team needs to attempt to make a move to help the rotation.  The bullpen is also pretty thin but has a very good closer in Jose Valverde.  I didn’t think this team had anything but today when I looked at the roster the talent on this team surprised me.  I am just telling you, in a very bad division this team, granted they stay healthy, could make some noise.
