Kevin Garnett

27 February 2009

r absence has exposed the Boston bench and forced Rivers to rely more on Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, who is beginning to show signs of fatigue.

Garnett may not admit it, but he's not the same player. The effort and the intensity is still there but KG's offense has fallen dramatically and his rebounding has become just average. KG still wants to push forward, but his gas tank is running close to empty.

Newspapers and local radio hosts hyped Tracy McGrady as the new Kevin Garnett in terms of having some success in the league, but never being able to get a ring. All of that led to Tuesday's nights game matching the Houston Rockets against the Defending World Champions, Boston Celtics.

he 08 team brought with it the absolute best of the best, that would have to include Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett in any discussion. Probably add Amare Stoudamire and Paul Pierce in there as well. You bring that team against Dream Team, and we might not be having this discussion at all. Of course, they didn’t bring those guys, instead they brought Tayshaun Prince, Carlos Boozer, Jason Kidd and Michael Redd.

Man, what an offseason. Who would’ve thought that after the whirlwind season and trade deadline we just experienced, we would have an equally crazy summer?

In one year, we’ve seen moved: The Kid and Jesus, Pau, Shaq, Bibby, J Kidd, Big Ben, Wally World, Baron Davis, Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, Jermaine O’Neal, Marcus Camby, Richard Jefferson, and T.J. Ford.

#20 provided spark from beyond the arc and a player that Paul Pierce could go to. Kevin Garnett. The passionate defender. The Big Ticket came into Boston and changed the entire culture. The Boston Celtics became a defensive basketball team with KG at the helm. KG’s play was dominant earning him the Defensive Player of the Year award and comparisons to the legendary Celtic Bill Russell. The Big Three lead the Boston Celtics to the promised land, a 17th World Championship, another banner hanging with the legends of the past.

I also can’t help but be happy for Kevin Garnett. For a guy who has worked so long, so hard, given so much of himself, expended so much heart and energy…he finally got that elusive ring. His emotional outpouring during his post-game interview was truly touching and memorable. “Anything is possible!” he howled. I also love how the dude gave a shout out—his first shout out, to Sota’. Said that this championship was for all of Sota’. Class act KG. Again, can’t help but be happy for him.

Lakers fans will tell you that the Lakers haven’t hit their stride. That Kobe isn’t playing the same way that he was in the first three series. That he isn’t moving the ball. That he’s taking too many bad shots. They say that Lamar Odom is struggling through nerves and that Pau Gasol is playing soft.

I hate blaming the refs. So I won’t do it. It’s true, the Lakers lost that game, and that’s that. But I would like to provide a little bit of information for all the Celtics fans who say that their team was the more aggressive in the paint.

-Sam Cassell gave me a scare. He came out and swished his first shot and I remember thinking that Sammy had this look on his face, “I’m here. This is my time, this is what I’ve been waiting for. Forget the rest of the playoffs, this is all I care about.” Gave me chills. Got me real, real scared.

ead and break down all the matchups, the fate of the series will be in the hands of Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett.

I've always believed that to win an NBA title, your best player has to be at his absolute best when it matters most. When you review past Finals MVPs, it's going to look like a Hall of Fame induction speech.

Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett

Why they are the MVP:  They turned around one of the worst teams in the league from a year ago.  They have given up the stats of superstars and meshed with Ray Allen and the role players to make the Celtics not just relevant again, but a powerhouse.

The only problem with having 60 wins, is having 60 wins.  The better the record, the more a team becomes a favorite, the more they're expected to win.  And ultimately, constant pressure starts pushing down on them like a fat guy in a kids top bunk bed.  It can be difficult for a team (or a frightened kid below), especially a great one.   I didn't even mention the Patriots.

Here’s another look at the top three MVP candidates this year. Apologies to Kevin Garnett, who has missed significant time and whose statistics just don’t quite measure up. If KG is going to be seriously considered, his team will need to finish with around 70 wins. His presence is felt mainly on the defensive end, so his defensive player of the year award should be a no brainer, however, KG has even said himself that Pierce is the Celtics' MVP.

But those rumors were brushed away as ridiculous. Amare for Kevin Garnett? Let's not be ridiculous. Amare's the future. KG is the past.  Well, not 60 days later and the whole world
