Kwame Brown

30 July 2008

* * * *

In other quasi-Lakers news, the Detroit Pistons signed my boy, Kwame Brown, to a two-year $8 million deal effectively destroying any hope I had of him resigning with the Lakers. He’ll be basically making, per season, half of what he made under his last contract.

Let’s not be too harsh to judge Chris Wallace. The more and more I study the Gasol trade, the better and better I think the Grizz actually made out.

Numbers tell a story.

num, called dough boy, who every media person in the world questioned both mentally and physically; Kwame Brown, no explanation needed; Ronny Turiaf, an energetic player who plays with the metaphorical heart, but who has real heart problems; Jordan Farmar, a sophomore point guard; Javaris Crittendon, a rookie point guard; Maurice Evans, an athletic, shoot-first backup shooting guard; Sasha Vujacic, a dude who Phil dubbed an 11 a.m. player because he could hit all his shots during practice, but none during the game; Lamar, a self-proclaimed number 3 trying to masquerade as a 2; and Fish who was the only saving grace for KB.

And Kobe spent three years of his prime working with Kwame Brown, Smush Parker, and a bunch of rookies who seemed outclassed and out of their league.

This past summer, he complained and demanded out. He even threw his young teammates under the bus, namely Andrew Bynum. Yes, very baby-like, very immature, very unclassy. Very, dare I say it, Shaq-like.

So long Kwame. I wrote fondly of you not three weeks ago. Then you went ahead and stunk it up so horribly that it was impossible to defend you. I still believe you have value, and if you want to come back to the Lakers next year and take, hmm, maybe a ¼ of what you made this year, then we would love to have you back. I still believe in your ability to play great, grounded defense. I still believe in that body, if not for those small hands. You could still help us win a championship. So don’t take this trade too hard. And try and forget those boo birds, though I’m sure you will one day when you are 75 years old, suddenly sit up in your bed covered in sweat, waking from a dream where you are still missing layups, still dropping easy passes, and hear the deafening echoes of screaming from the crowds, your home crowd, as they tear you a new one. But try to forget.

Good grief and all that Kwame Brown.

Give him a bit of a break. A smidgen please.

This was his 10th game back. His second game as a starter. Remember how money he was, when he was relatively healthy, playing against the Suns in the 2006 playoffs? Obviously you don’t. But please try and remember. Remember his game 3 performance where he scored 13, pulled down 11, dished out 5, swiped a steal, and blocked 3 shots? Remember how in that decisive game 6 the Lakers should have won, Brown made 8 of 9 shots?

Once again, the injury bug strikes at the height of success.

Andrew Bynum is out for eight weeks. Eight weeks. That’s two months. The kid’s been stellar in his third season, averaging 13 and 10 with 2 blocks. He’s been shooting a scalding 63 percent, and has been a key component in the Lakers’ rise to the top of the West. Over his past five games, all Lakers’ victories, he’s been phenomenal. 17.5 points, 11.5 boards, with 2.4 assists and 2.2 blocks, while shooting an insane 69 percent from the field.

y am I saying to keep the $9 million, bust-of-a-draft-pick, injury-prone, stone-handed, noose named Kwame Brown?

Let me break it down for you slick. First off. Look at the boy. Yes, boy. Okay, manboy. He's only 25 (okay, soon to be 26, but people are all giddy about Jamario Moon and he’s 27!). So it’s not like he’s even reached his prime yet. He’s only 3 years older than Dwight Howard. In comparison, Dwight's 2 year's older than Bynum.
