Jerry Jones signing of Terrell Owens, Detroit Pistons trading for Allen Iverson, the Lakers signing Karl Malone and Gary Payton, what are these teams thinking? Why can teams not be happy with their team and why do they think that the key to a championship? Hows this for a thought, get a roll player. We have seen these players go to these teams thinking we will win a championship, thank again. Terrel Owens destroyed that team, a team that was on the rise then Team Obliterater comes along and now look where they are. The Detroit Pistons go off and trade away one of the best point/2 guards in the NBA in Chauncy Billups and get Allen Iverson in return. Okay so maybe this is a good trade, in 1999 but what are they thinking getting a ball hogging old man? The

When the Los Angeles Lakers season tipped off, the Odom Meter was running low as all eyes were on Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. The casual fan and longtime basketball experts were curious to know whether the two 7-footers can co-exist when paired in the post in Phil Jackson’s triangle offense. That meant Odom was relegated to the bench, a move he openly accepted but with some reluctance. Trade rumors started flying around Staples Center.

Kobe Bryant is not the Lakers' most valuable player this season. What? Yup, sounds utterly ridiculous but it's true. Bryant may be the best player on earth, but the title of Lakers MVP belongs to Pau Gasol. As good as Kobe Bryant is (and he's very, very good), the game is still played inside-out. NBA championships are won with the big guys in the paint, not with the guys who make the "pretty" plays.

Before we crown the Lakers world champs for the 2008-09 season, let's taper down the myopia and look at this team from an unbiased viewpoint. The Detroit Pistons sent the Lakers back to reality after easily winning at Staples Center on Friday, Nov. 14. I discovered three things from that game.

Gasol told Yahoo! Sports: “Some of us didn’t feel comfortable doing it just because to me it was a little clownish for our part to be doing that. But the sponsors insisted and insisted. I think it is just a bad idea I guess to do that, but it was never intended to be offensive or racist against anybody.

Leon Powe. Yup. That Leon Powe.
Leon F. Powe (the F stands for something that rhymes with "ducking") was the difference in Game 2 and is the reason why the Celtics are up 2-0 in the series.

Wouldn't it be great if NBA officials called things the way their NHL counterparts do?
You know, even if the game is in the balance, you call a penalty when you see a penalty.
In the second overtime with the game tied at 3 in Game 5 of the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals between the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins, Red Wings rightwinger Jiri Hudler was hit with a four-minute penalty for high-sticking Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi. Detroit had penalty-killed two power plays earlier in the game. But those were two minutes long, and a four-minute penalty kill when the game's long and the team's tired was probably just too much.

The Spurs are down 2-0 to the Los Angeles Lakers in the Best-of-Seven Western Conference finals. The first game the Spurs barely lost despite having had virtually no rest and despite giving up a 20-point third-quarter lead. In the second game, things fared even worse as L.A. beat San Antonio 101-71. The Spurs have four championships, a great strong, silent leader in Tim "The Big Fundamental" Duncan and a team known for its defense. Well, this year the

After the Lakers' unbelievable 89-85 comeback victory in Game 1, a few thoughts ran across my mind.
One, the San Antonio Spurs cannot guard Kobe Bryant. Never had. Never will. Kobe was absolutely right when he said, "I can get off any time I want" (he meant basketball term "getting off"). Once Kobe finally escaped the bermuda triangle he was on in the first half, the league's MVP took control of the game.

The Lakers-Jazz series went six games but I never felt the Jazz really threatened the Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals.
The Jazz are a nice team but they lack a true superstar. They don't have a player who Shaquille O'Neal calls "assassins." Utah has borderline all-stars in Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer, but it doesn't have a player who can single-handedly destroy an opponent's gameplan. A player who can put a team on his shoulders on offense and carry them to victory. A player like Kobe Bryant.

It has been well documented how well stacked the Lakers are this season with the addition of Pau Gasol. This moved Odom to third in the pecking order, the ideal place for him to best shine. He’s playing like a poor man’s Magic. Yeah. You heard me right.

He took 25 shots mostly against first-rate defender Raja Bell and made 16 of them in the Lakers' 130-124 victory over the Suns. Taking 25 shots in a game is nothing new to Kobe. He can take shot 25 shots in his sleep. But Wednesday night against the Suns, Kobe's shot selection was perfect. It seemed like all his FGAs were good looks and were well within the framework of the offense.

With the Lakers set to square off against the Phoenix Suns tomorrow night, everyone will get their first peak at the newly Shaquillized original run-n-gun team.
I have to admit, karma is a foul, unsavory witch. Kobe complained this offseason. Wanted to be moved. Was frustrated with his team mates. Then didn’t get his way. He came into this season fired up and ready to roll, played his heart out like he always does. The

On Sunday when the Lakers played the Heat there were three moments of note.
There was the foul in the second quarter where Kobe let Dwayne Wade know that basketball indeed is a physical game. The offense had broken down and Kobe was taking it to the hoop. As he made his move to get past Wade, he extended his right forearm and popped Wade square on the chin with his elbow. He was rightfully called for an offensive foul and Wade rubbed his chin and played it cool. But the message was clear. Kobe plays to win, plays hard and gives nothing up easy. Not now, and most likely never again. Sure, there were times over the course of the last couple seasons where the guys Kobe was guarding were allowed long stretches of easy buckets. Dude was too busy dropping 40 plus on some nights, and regardless of how effortless he makes it look, shooting the ball while being double and triple teamed is an exhausting process. Just ask Dwayne Wade.

Lakers officials are not publicly saying it but trading for Pau Gasol signaled three things: 1) Kwame Brown was unable to shake off the public criticisms and desperately needed a new address, 2) Kobe Bryant finally got his wish and having an All-Star sidekick means he'll remain a Laker for life, and 3) Andrew Bynum's knee injury is a lot more serious than what the team is revealing.

The Lakers looked awesome last night. Well, for a half at least. A night after coming off an 11-assist performance which included several wrap-around-the-back passes (the most impressive, by the way, was not the one to Turiaf, but rather the left handed around the back pass to Odom in the post—what an impossible pass…Try that Steve Nash!) Kobe had the Lakeshow rolling early. They took a 54-45 lead into halftime against the, albeit struggling, defending champs.

Thanks Sammy my boy, you've put the Lakers in sole possession of first place in not only the Pacific division, but in the entire Western conference. And for those of you who don't know who I'm talking about, first of all, shame on you, and second, that would be Sam Cassell of the Los Angeles Clippers who dropped a cool 32 points, 6 boards and 7 assists on the Phoenix Suns last night. And thanks to my Aunt and Uncle, I was able to have excellent seats at the game.
