If LeBron James is the MVP of the NBA, then Bryant is the MVP of a galaxy far, far away.

Sometimes it is way up, and sometimes it is way down.

When the Los Angeles Lakers season tipped off, the Odom Meter was running low as all eyes were on Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum. The casual fan and longtime basketball experts were curious to know whether the two 7-footers can co-exist when paired in the post in Phil Jackson’s triangle offense. That meant Odom was relegated to the bench, a move he openly accepted but with some reluctance. Trade rumors started flying around Staples Center.

Kobe Bryant is not the Lakers' most valuable player this season. What? Yup, sounds utterly ridiculous but it's true. Bryant may be the best player on earth, but the title of Lakers MVP belongs to Pau Gasol. As good as Kobe Bryant is (and he's very, very good), the game is still played inside-out. NBA championships are won with the big guys in the paint, not with the guys who make the "pretty" plays.

If last night’s narrow victory told us anything about the Lakers, it told us that there are a couple of holes in the Lakers new and league best defense. For one, they are susceptible to the 3-point shot. The way their defense is devised, they allow for the weak side to shoot the corner three, though they still try to get back and contest the shot. Point is, that shot is available. Another thing that was obvious (see Erick Dampier’s 12 offensive rebounds) is that when they do try and defend that corner shot, they allow a lot of offensive rebounds to guys willing to put in the work. Last night, Damp put in the work and was rewarded. Tonight, Tyson Chandler, who always puts in the work, will kill the O boards if the

You know, even if the game is in the balance, you call a penalty when you see a penalty.

In the second overtime with the game tied at 3 in Game 5 of the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals between the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins, Red Wings rightwinger Jiri Hudler was hit with a four-minute penalty for high-sticking Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi. Detroit had penalty-killed two power plays earlier in the game. But those were two minutes long, and a four-minute penalty kill when the game's long and the team's tired was probably just too much.

The Lakers-Jazz series went six games but I never felt the Jazz really threatened the Lakers in the Western Conference semifinals.

The Jazz are a nice team but they lack a true superstar. They don't have a player who Shaquille O'Neal calls "assassins." Utah has borderline all-stars in Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer, but it doesn't have a player who can single-handedly destroy an opponent's gameplan. A player who can put a team on his shoulders on offense and carry them to victory. A player like Kobe Bryant.

The Lakers, Jazz, Celtics, Pistons, Magic, Cavs, Spurs and Wizards have no need for him. The T-Wolves are trying to shed contracts, not take them on. The Knicks don’t have anything to offer and don’t have Isaiah to push for bad trades. The Sonics and Grizzlies are in rebuilding mode and don’t have room for a 27-year old tweener with no veteran leadership skills. Young, playoff ready teams like Atlanta, Philly, and Portland have already got their SFs. Ditto for Indiana, New Jersey and the Raptors. Milwaukee’s a mess (Bobby Simmons makes similar money…). Chicago and Denver, if they are looking to trade, have got way better SFs in Deng and Melo (although Diaw might actually work on the Nugs, but no way Diaw and anybody for Melo goes down…unless it’s Nash). On Sunday when the Lakers played the Heat there were three moments of note.

There was the foul in the second quarter where Kobe let Dwayne Wade know that basketball indeed is a physical game. The offense had broken down and Kobe was taking it to the hoop. As he made his move to get past Wade, he extended his right forearm and popped Wade square on the chin with his elbow. He was rightfully called for an offensive foul and Wade rubbed his chin and played it cool. But the message was clear. Kobe plays to win, plays hard and gives nothing up easy. Not now, and most likely never again. Sure, there were times over the course of the last couple seasons where the guys Kobe was guarding were allowed long stretches of easy buckets. Dude was too busy dropping 40 plus on some nights, and regardless of how effortless he makes it look, shooting the ball while being double and triple teamed is an exhausting process. Just ask Dwayne Wade.
