Larry Bird

16 November 2009

There is a first time for everything; people typically say this after something downright amazing happens.  I've also heard of this being used on pick up lines many times while dominating the drinking establishments in Madison, Wisconsin.  Typically; your Average Joe with a nobody name and even less game will launch it out there to a fine East Coast hunny.  "I don't leave the bars without my friends," or "I don't like guys that play World of Warcraft for 12 hours straight."  Person X that just got dissed/rejected gets a smirk and offers, "Well, there's a first time for everything."  Don't lie; you've used it yourself or know somebody that has.  This is one of those cases; something amazing happens.  I'm not getting rejected, but I am posting a rewind from the past week.. yes, ladies and gentlemen.  Much like when communist Russia fell.. The Buccaneers got an NFL win this season.. there is a 1st time for everything!

o step up to the plate as commish and bring out the best in those around me.  I have to be the Larry Bird of the league; I have to put these other 11 clowns on my back and make them look like All Stars (McHale, Chief Parrish, Danny Ainge, the late Dennis Johnson were like the Bucks today without Bird).  I have to make them think they are special; that they can "win" without me.  If I'm done with an injury or illness (or out walking the dog or visiting Pease's like I did today) the other guys have to step up.  They need to pick up the intensity and the IQ.  They have to get the job done.  It's up to me to make them believe that.  And trust me, I will.  I'm not Charlie Weis here; I don't call for BCS bowls and then lose to inferior triple option opponents on my home turf.  I go Nick Barnett on them and push them down stairs.   Can't nobody take my pride.. can't nobody hold me down.. oh no, I got to keep on moving!

The first week was dominated by Michael Phelps, his 8 gold medals, his 7 world records, that fingernail finish, the come from behind in the 4X100 by Lezac. The second week was all about the American track and field team failing to come through and the Jamaican team, led by Usain Bolt, blowing past the competition.

I’m tired of all the flashbacks and reminiscing going on in the NBA due to the Celtics/Lakers matchup set for tomorrow evening. All the montages and interviews and whatnot are making me noxious (thanks NBA for giving us a whole week before game 1).

The only problem with having 60 wins, is having 60 wins.  The better the record, the more a team becomes a favorite, the more they're expected to win.  And ultimately, constant pressure starts pushing down on them like a fat guy in a kids top bunk bed.  It can be difficult for a team (or a frightened kid below), especially a great one.   I didn't even mention the Patriots.
