Major Wright

7 November 2011

squo;s defense established dominance on the Eagles’ first drive thanks to a redzone pick from Major Wright, halting Vick in his tracks. The Bears knocked the Eagles QB on his butt on every possible occasion, making sure they made Vick pay for any plays he even thought about making. Julius Peppers, Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs all got in on the fun at various points, using their speed to keep Vick under wraps. Aside from the pick, Wright still showed flashes of idiocy, missing a key tackle on LeSean McCoy on third down that helped set-up a 33 yard run to end a lengthy 15 play drive.

andon Meriweather, Chicago’s starting safeties will be rookie Chris Conte and second year pro Major Wright. Hopefully they can take better angles and limit big plays by keeping the ball in front of them at all times. Where they’ll likely have issues is biting on run-fakes and double-movies. Fortunately for them, the Viking receivers aren’t exactly dangerous and Donovan McNabb couldn’t get a pass to them if his job depended on it. McNabb’s passes have a tendency to wobble and ground into the dirt, which keeps his completion percentage and interception totals low. Chicago won’t get many chances at turnovers from McNabb, especially since Julius Peppers likely won’t play due to a knee injury. With only Israel Idonije, Nick Reed and Corey Wootton as their ends with any game action behind them, the interior defensive line rotation must get penetration to disrupt the Viking offense.

season game, the Bears looked more than ready to enter the season with Chris Harris and second-year Major Wright at the safety position. This meant Wright would learn on the job, with missed tackles and assignments sure to come. But then the Patriots cut 2-time Pro Bowler Brandon Meriweather, whom the Bears quickly snapped up. Meriweather should be a starter as soon as he is able, both from a talent perspective as well as the value of his one-year contract. ($2.25 million salary, $1.25 million signing bonus.) He’ll likely displace Wright at free safety, giving the Bears two playmakers in the defensive backfield. Meriweather was a great pick-up at a position of need with little risk involved. It’ll pay dividends this year.

Step up Roy.Major Wright: Major Mistakes?

Two preseason games in, there’s only one thing I can say for certain about second year safety Major Wright: he will make an impact. But whether it's because of a head-knocking hit or being out of position in run defense, who knows. Without more OTA’s, film sessions and coaching in the offseason, the Bears need to get Wright up to speed in a hurry. It’s clear he has some talent, but so did Danieal Manning. Chicago’s defense cannot afford for Wright to be a liability in an already questionable secondary.Interior D-Linemen: Where are you?

Without Lance Briggs, back-up Brian Iwuh came in and performed well, as did Tim Jennings. Major Wright, on the other hand, whiffed on a few separate tackles and was noticeably out of position on several plays. Dude needs work.

olve his "bust" status.Safety Play

With the long-awaited departure of Danieal Manning, Major Wright will get his shot as a starting safety for Lovie Smith’s defense. Chris Harris will likely slide over to free safety technically, but it’s all the same in a cover-two defensive scheme. Getting injured last preseason derailed any chance of Wright starting the season, but the job’s all his now. Can he speed past the initial mistakes or will he be caught out of position too often?

If Conte can develop alongside Major Wright, perhaps he’s found his future starting safeties.

On the final day of the draft, the Bears are going to look at corner and wide receiver. There’s plenty of room to take another lineman on the offensive (perhaps a center/guard project) or defensive front as well. Still, look for them to try and trade back to get a few more in the late rounds or for next year’s draft. Keep an eye on receiver Edmund Gates. He's another quick, fast receiver out of Abilene Christian University (like Knox and Manning), which means he has Bears written all over him.

and three interceptions on Vikings quarterbacks equal a Bears victory.

On the minus side of life, Major Wright looked to get injured on every other play. I’d chalk most of that up to the frozen surface, though. Chicago’s offense still needs to improve, but the conditions weren’t ideal for the “greatest show” tonight. However, putting up 40 points any night is impressive, no matter how you score them.

He's an in-the-box safety. Major Wright, the Bears' top pick in this latest draft should find his way into a starting role before the fourth game of the season. He has the range and speed necessary and needs to get playing time and experience. Harris at the strong spot and Wright at free is Chicago's best safety duo.

deep drops in Martz's scheme, the line needs to get on track.

-Safeties: Do we have any?

Major Wright won't be playing because of recent finger surgery. Crag Steltz will be out as well. We'll see if Danieal Manning plays or not. In any case, the Bears are very thin at the safety spot, which will cause some issues as they sort out the starters for opening day. If Wright isn't playing, how can he be promoted?

was running, it would be hard for anyone to get pressure.

-The star of the night was undoubtedly Major Wright. In early after Craig Steltz (who was starting for the injured Danieal Manning) left with an injury, Wright came on and made his share of solid tackles in the backfield as well as downfield. Unfortunately, Wright eventually left the game with a finger injury. Eff. Need more safeties.

g the safety spot:

Who's starting the season? Chris Harris at free and Danieal Manning at strong? Major Wright at strong and Chris Harris at free? Who knows with Lovie Smith these days? Smith has never been able to stick with a safety combination, whether it's because of injury or poor play. Manning may be on his last chance at safety (let's hope) while Chris Harris isn't fit to play the free safety spot.

>Following 74 picks, the Chicago Bears finally made their 2010 Draft debut by taking Florida Safety Major Wright in the third round Friday night.

At 6'0 and 206 lbs, Wright ran a 4.44 40-time at the NFL combine but figures to be in play at the strong safety position. He racked 165 tackles and eight interceptions in his 41 games at Florida. He had been a target of Angelo's throughout the draft process and was the top safety left on the board. ESPN's Mel Kiper had Wright projected as a second-round talent.
