New Orleans Saints

8 February 2010

If you're reading this, it means you're not among the thralls of New Orleans Saints fans in Louisiana or with the team in Miami that are just beginning what is sure to be a month-long party because their team just won their first ever Super Bowl. On a night thought by many to be Peyton Manning's coronation, Drew Brees ended up at the post-game podium as the MVP of the night after a 31-17 victory. Sunday's championship contest didn't get off to the most exciting of starts, but it sure finished with one.

After prepping you for the game yesterday with separate previews of the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints, it's time to bring the two together for my Super Bowl predictions.

As you're enjoying commercials and stuffing your face with every snack food known to man, it's hard to remember there's a game to be watched. If you miss it, you could miss one of the most explosive Super Bowl match-ups in history. Behind Drew Brees and Peyton Manning, these offenses are always threats to hit the big play. That gives defensive coordinators headaches. Each defense will look to pressure the opposing QB early and often. Whoever best achieves that goal has the best chance to take home the coveted Lombardi Trophy.

n this special edition of the Opening Drive I take a look at the NFC representative in SB XLIV, the New Orleans Saints.

Head Coach Sean Payton has taken this team from the bowels of the NFL to a legitimate contender. His offense put up a league-high 32 points a game during the regular season, making it one of the most prolific in history. But we all knew the Saints had a great offense. It was Payton's decision to bring in Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator (and give up part of his own salary to do so, as has been widely publicized) that propelled his Saints to the Super Bowl. While it wasn't dominating, Williams' pressure-filled defense created 39 takeaways during the regular season, second only to the Green Bay Packers. Who needs to stop the run when you'll simply force a turnover on the next the play? On the way to the big game, the Saints absolutely punished Kurt Warner and Brett Favre in their two victories. They want to repeat that result against Peyton Manning.

Are you ready for two weeks of hype for a Brett Favre versus Peyton Manning Super Bowl?

Well TOO FREAKING BAD! The Saints were having none of it today. And what a coincidence that in a year marred by missed field goals, it was on the leg of lesser-known Saints kicker Garrett Hartley that the Saints earned a spot in their first ever Super Bowl with a 31-28 win over the Vikings.

They'll cover.

Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints
6:40ET FOX

After blowing up the supposedly superior Dallas Cowboys last week in Minnesota, Brett Favre and the Vikings are traveling to a different dome for the NFC title game, this time in New Orleans. Hopefully for coach Brad Childress he brought Adrian Peterson and his running game along for the ride. They'll need it to keep Drew Brees and the Saints offense on the sidelines. In an opposing dome, the Viking o-line must maintain their composure and avoid costly penalties that will put Favre in obvious passing situations. Percy Harvin is expected to play after missing practices all week with migraines. Minnesota's defense can rush the passer and stop the run with the best of the NFL, but they are weak in the secondary. Getting to Brees early and often could shift the balance in their purple-flavored-favor. Will Favre reach the Super Bowl and ignite sports nation in two weeks of hype?

ardinals to kick-off the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

Responding to the quick score, the New Orleans Saints proved why they were the number one seed on the NFC by scoring touchdowns on three straight possessions to give them a 21-7 lead before the end of the first quarter. Bush lowered the hammer on two early carries to set the tone early: these Saints would not be denied. A Beanie Wells score early in the second brought the Cardinals back into striking distance, but that would be the last time the Cardinals would hit the scoreboard. Their two turnovers killed drives and gave the Saints 14 points.

Here we are at the second week of the NFL playoffs again, which brings up the same question every year.  Is it better for teams that have clinched first-round byes and playoff seeds to rest their players at the end of the regular season, or play them to keep on a roll going into the playoffs?  Lets look at both sides of the issue.

waste any time, here's the Opening Drive for Divisional Saturday in the NFL!

Arizona Cardinals at New Orleans Saints
4:30PM ET FOX

After last Sunday night's shoot-out in the desert, the Cardinals head to the Superdome, ready to repeat last year's post-season success. Quarterback Kurt Warner has a knack for playing his best football in the playoffs and last week was no exception. He is expected to be without receiver Anquan Boldin for the second straight week, but that will be a game-time decision. He'll still have Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston on the outside, so he'll be just fine. Arizona shocked Green Bay with their commitment to the running game last week, gaining over 150 yards on the ground. Concerns arise when discussing their defense, but as we saw in overtime last week, they can make plays when they need them. Darnell Dockett, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Adrian Wilson all have thr ability to affect the outcome.

(13-2) New Orleans Saints 17

This game was the WTF? moment of the weekend. The formerly 13-0 Saints have dropped two straight, but losing on a last second field goal to the lowly Buccaneers is inexcusable. Cadillac Williams ran all over the Saints defense, but it was the New Orleans offense struggling to put up points that lost them the game. That defense isn't good enough to keep teams under 17.

Let's start the Opening Drive of week 15 in the NFL!

(8-5) Dallas Cowboys at (13-0) New Orleans Saints

Dallas' DeMarcus Ware is going to play less than a week after suffering a neck strain, but that may not be enough for the free-falling Cowboys. Going into New Orleans and escaping with a victory will require near-flawless play and a lot of luck. Even without tight end Jeremy Shockey, Drew Brees has an abundance of weapons at his disposal. If the Saints move to 14-0, it will could signal the end of Dallas' playoff hopes and the end of Wade Philips' tenure as head coach.

New England Patriots (7-3) at New Orleans Saints (10-0)

If the Colts / Pats game wasn’t so tremendously awesome, this would be a candidate for game of the year. It’s too much and too soon to ask for another Patriot meltdown though. Oh well. I guess I’d settle for a blowout and four touchdowns from Drew Brees. I’m sorry, is my bias showing? Go Saints.

(7-0) New Orleans Saints 35
(4-3) Atlanta Falcons 27

Monday night’s Superdome thriller could have been a preview of an NFC divisional round playoff game. Matt Ryan uncharacteristically tossed three interceptions, which will likely never happen again. Michael Turner rushed for over 100 yards (151) in a loss, which has never happened before. Drew Brees hit eight different receivers for his 25 completions, utilizing the arsenal at his disposal. Reggie Bush had only five touches, making him an afterthought and a decoy in this Saints win. Sean Payton didn’t even need Bush to be successful. How impressive is that?

Monday Night Football will be rocking at the Superdome! The offensive juggernaut that is the Saints welcome Matt Ryan and the Falcons for an important NFC South division showdown. If Atlanta is going to make a push in this race, now is the time. They can’t afford to fall another game behind the streaking Saints. If Sean Payton’s team can make it to 7-0, they have to be the clear favorites to win the NFC. With a remaining schedule that includes Tampa twice, Carolina twice, Washington and St. Louis, they have a great shot at 12-14 wins. Look out everyone else.

(6-0) New Orleans Saints 46
(2-4) Miami Dolphins 34

Oh Miami, you were so close! It was a valiant effort, but you can’t hold Drew Brees down for long. His two rushing TD’s are proof of that. Down 21 points in the first half, the Saints fought back with 36 points in the second, including a 42-yard interception return by Darren Sharper. Tony Sparano’s Dolphins show promise for the future, but their schedule so far this season has been simply brutal.

This is almost a mirror image of Miami’s match-up with Indianapolis. The Dolphins will play ball control offense and may find success with the Wildcat, but they won’t be able to match up points with the Saints. Drew Brees is far too accurate with the football to be human.

Drew Brees hasn’t thrown a touchdown for a second straight week and the Saints are still undefeated. Why? They’ve established a running game and played excellent defense. The match-up of the undefeateds! The Saints’ offense versus the Jets’ defense. Does it get any better? New York is riding high on the back of Rex Ryan’s immense swagger and his blitz-crazy defense. They face off against Drew Brees and the high-powered Saints, who proved last week they have a defense of their own. The Jets can’t keep up with the Saints on the scoreboard, so their defense will need to keep it close. If the Saints get above 24 points, you can almost lock in a win.

30 September 2009

Saints Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams received the game ball from New Orleans' 27-7 win Sunday, reportedly to a roar from the team's locker room in Buffalo's Ralph Wilson Stadium that could be heard several rooms away.  Hopefully Williams smiled upon thinking about the thousand and one sports critics who said "sure the Saints can score points, but their DEFENSE sucks."  The NFL, and really all sports teams with the exception of Notre Dame and the Yankees and their ilk, exist on a Show Me First basis.  Notre Dame looks like they might not be horrible this year, and Lou Holtz says he wouldn't be surprised to see them play for the national championship.  The Yankees sign another $10 million-plus bat or arm, and they can't be beaten. You know other teams like that. But many teams have to prove a point over and over to replace the popular misconception of them.  Just the other day someone told me that the Ravens couldn't keep their current success going because "they're a defensive team, and their defensive numbers have dropped."  Like my jaw. Sure, historically the Ravens have been a defensive team, but the team is only 13 years old. And no matter how old a team is, its focuses and strong/weak points can change.  I'd assume they'd have to in order to stay relevant in the modern NFL (how you doing back there, Cleveland?).  Truth be told, it looks like the Ravens have compensated beautifully on the offensive side for the defensive decline.  "Historic" Ravens football?  No. Winning football? Yes. No team has ever stayed good by doing the same thing over and over with no change.  Want proof?  The Oakland Raiders.

It wasn’t a complete blowout by halftime, but this could have been the most impressive Saints win so far. Their defense came up with four sacks and two turnovers and gave up only seven points. The offense rushed for 222 yards and didn’t need Drew Brees to throw a touchdown. Now that’s impressive.

How long can Buffalo’s defense keep it close? I think Drew Brees and the Saints will have a two touchdown lead by halftime. They’re just that good. T.O. has to be more ready for downfield throws than he was last week, because they’ll need every score they can get.

In the midst of a fight for their playoff lives, the Bears and Saints can ill afford another loss on their records. New Orleans Saints 29, Atlanta Falcons 25

The Saints aren’t exiting the NFC South playoff hunt without a fight. Matt Ryan of the Falcons may have been the better quarterback on the field, but Drew Brees had a better running game backing him up. New Orleans racked up 184 yards rushing thanks to 102 yards from Pierre Thomas and 80 from the now healthier Reggie Bush. Week thirteen is in the books and online in this Final Drive!

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23, New Orleans Saints 20

The Bucs needed to fight off a fourth quarter rally with a late field goal and two interceptions in the final four minutes, but they managed to come out on top over Drew Brees and the Saints. Tampa’s secondary picked off the MVP candidate Brees three times in total and held the Saints to 44 rushing yards to prove their defense is still one of the best on football. Jeff Garcia had a sub-par outing, going 9 for 23 and one touchdown, but Jon Gruden’s squad found a way to win. The Saints would need to win out and get a lot of help in order to get into the playoffs, so they’ll need to start looking at ways to improve that defense… again.

Aaron Rodgers has played fairly well, but the Packer defense hasn’t backed him up.

New Orleans Saints (6-5) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-3)

Losing to a division opponent this weekend would almost certainly eliminate New Orleans from playoff contention. The NFC South is a much-improved landscape, and the Saints have suffered too many injuries to keep pace. Reggie Bush is listed as questionable, but has declared his intention to be on the field. Tampa Bay has fought off the returning Panthers and the rising Falcons to hold a share of the South lead after twelve weeks. Jon Gruden has done a solid coaching job, but keeping Jeff Garcia out of the starting line-up for so long may have cost his team a win. Even if the Bucs can’t hold onto the division, they should be in a prime spot to take a wildcard slot. Expect to see them come January.

This is the kind of game the Saints often find a way to lose. The Chefs' offense has been improving and they had Larry Johnson back from his - um, off-the-field issues. Matt Ryan is the real deal. A frontrunner for rookie of the year through nine games, Ryan out-dueled MVP candidate Drew Brees to put his Falcons at 6-3. Unfortunately that puts them tied for second place in a cutthroat NFC South. If they can’t overtake the Panthers, it is possible they could sneak in as a wildcard in the NFC. Though they managed to defeat San Diego without Bush, the longer he is out the more a playoff spot slips away from the Saints. 's Record: 3-1

*Classic NFL Films music hits*

1) San Diego Chargers @ New Orleans Saints

Saints are slated to be the home team in this one as the NFL heads overseas to play at London's Wembley Stadium for a second consecutive season. Giants and the Dolphins played last season in a soggy-rainy affair at 'legendary' Wembley. I remember going into that game a lot of people were like wow "Giants-Dolphins" is what we brought overseas?! Turns out...we brought the Superbowl Champions over there. Just shows any team can take the prize at the end of the tunnel. Especially this season with the NFL being more unpredictable and 'topsy curvy'. This game features two disappointments so far this season. Things however are looking worse for the Saints as lead running back Reggie Bush suffered cartilage damage in his knee against the Panthers last week. The Saints have also lost all 3 away from the Superdome. For some reason...my gut is thinking the Saints, but I'm going to pick safe here and go with the healthier team and pick San Diego.

San Diego Chargers (3-4) at New Orleans Saints (3-4)

San Diego was man-handled by the Bills last week, so they’re due for an exciting win. The problem is, so are the Saints. These are two of the most unpredictable teams in the league, and both are coming off bad losses. The Chargers aren’t making up any ground on the faltering Broncos, and sooner than later the frustration will take its toll on them. L.T.’s toe injury just hasn’t gone away, and it’s causing their running game to suffer tremendously. Philip Rivers leads the league in touchdowns at 16 and passer rating at 108.5, but his spectacular season is overshadowed by the Chargers’ incongruity.  San Diego won’t be able to keep trading off wins and losses, so getting back to .500 is monumental going into the second half of the year.

Carolina Panthers 30, New Orleans Saints 7

This was another game that was supposed to be highly competitive between two teams fighting for NFC South supremacy. Instead, we have another blow-out, and New Orleans has another injury to one of its stars. This time it’s the electrifying Reggie Bush, who left with a knee injury in the first half. He had surgery on Monday, and he’s expected to miss around 4 weeks. Tight end Jeremy Shockey may have re-injured his groin after returning to action after having sports hernia surgery about a month ago. Bush is the more serious injury, as he’s not only the Saints’ premiere running back, but he is among the league leaders in receptions, and he is the Saints’ primary kick returner. These facets of Reggie’s game have helped him to lead the league in touchdowns with eight (tied with the Titan’s Lendale White). If he’s out for an extended period of time, the Saints could be in trouble of falling completely out of the NFC South picture. In the stats, this looked like an even game, aside from the Saint’s two turnovers. It was anything but, as the Panthers asserted themselves.

New Orleans Saints (3-3) at Carolina Panthers (4-2)

I love these NFC South divisional contests. Its only week seven, but the playoffs are already on the line for New Orleans, who embarrassed Oakland last Sunday. Drew Brees is far and away the MVP so far, and he’s done it without three top threats in receiver Marques Colston, Jeremy Shockey, and David Patten. There could be an explosion in Carolina, as all three are expected to return to action. Reggie Bush has carried this team in their absence by way of his running, pass receptions, and kick and punt returns. Their presence will allow him more opportunities for big plays while taking the pressure of his shoulders.

Look for this game to top sixty points combined, and probably seventy. Two high powered offenses are heading up against mediocre to poor defenses. I’d rank the Broncos defense higher than the Saints, because any defense with Champ Bailey and Dre’ Bly is a scary one. On offense, Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall are catching every bullet that emerging superstar Jay Cutler sends their way. Drew Brees, on the other hand, will be without Marques Colston for another week, so look for tight end Jeremy Shockey to factor largely into the Saints passing attack.

Now, the news that Marques Colston is out for 4-6 weeks hits New Orleans fans where it really hurts. Colston had grabbed more passes than any receiver in history through his first two seasons. The third-year is often when wide receivers have their breakout years. That can't be the case for Colston now, at least statistically.

The offense looked great and even more importantly the defense held up. They did that even without star corner Mike McKenzie, who got scratched Sunday. Saints fans have to be pleased opening the year with a win over the defending division champions.

I am not about to fall into the trap of getting too excited about preseason results. The New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals first-team offenses looked good, or their first-team defenses continued looking bad depending on who you ask. The Saints didn't have new acquisition Jeremy Shockey or old standby Deuce McAllister, so it will be exciting to see what firepower they add.

Brees can get it done. They have to let him do it.

To sum it all up. The New Orleans Saints have all the talent in the world to be a viable contender in the NFL, but last year was a

The Ft. Worth Star Telegram reports the Dallas Cowboys, badly in need of another wide receiver, are the latest team to suggest to Joe Horn that he no longer fits that definition.  Since the Saints gave up on Horn three years ago he has averaged a paltry 525 yards a season. As emotional as it might have been for Saints fans to see a longtime productive receiver go, looks like New Orleans was dead on in its assessment of what Horn had left.

With just three weeks before the start of training camp, one of the team's biggest offensive threats isn't signed to a long-term deal. Wide receiver Marques Colston has emerged as one of the most promising young superstars in the game and is slated to earn $445,000 this year.

Not that there's probably ever a downside to being seen in public with the lovely and talented Kim Kardashian, but my favorite guilty pleasure show TMZ caught a funny moment with the couple the other night. Reggie went to pay the valet but didn't have any cash on him. So, of course, he pulls some cash out of Kim's purse.

Sometimes statistics show us that perception and reality are two entirely different things. In the new soon-to-be hit movie Hancock, Hollywood's Will Smith plays a superhero with an image problem. In contrast, New Orleans' Will Smith looks to be getting away with a little somethin-somethin due to a cleaner image.

The New Orleans Saints added two former members of the Arena League's New Orleans Voodoo Tuesday, signing center Rob Hunt and guard Isaiah Ross. Hunt has bounced around the NFL quite a bit. He is a former fifth-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts. From there he spent the 2005 and 2006 seasons on the Denver Broncos practice squad and in the 2007 preseason was a Kansas City Chief. He played two seasons in the now defunct NFL Europe for the Berlin and Rhein franchises.

*Editor's Note: This piece was written Tuesday night but, due to Internet problems, is being posted just now.

Only the NFL can make headlines with the release of its regular season schedule. Granted, there are only a handful of games for fans to absorb, so the attention given to each week is natural. However, this speaks increasingly to the booming popularity of the league.

The New Orleans Saints, who already had a proven running back in Deuce McAllister, still selected Reggie Bush with the No.2 overall selection in last year’s NFL Draft. It was not a need pick. The Saints simply could not pass on the talent of a player like Reggie Bush. The Browns cannot afford to bypass Adrian Peterson.
