Norv Turner

Smith and Head Coach Norv Turner

OH COME ON!!! I was finally ready to break-up the Turner/Philips romance. However, you can chalk up this stay of execution to a few select reasons. First, key players (i.e. Rivers) probably bitched enough to convince management that it would cause chemistry issues to change coaches. Second, who were they going to get that was even marginally better? Turner’s still got swagger when it comes to his offense, so I’m not sure who was out there (that would come to San Diego) that would be a marked improvement. Maybe Cowher or Gruden if they got extraordinarily lucky, but I’m sure they were rejected outright on those fronts. Finally, it’s the AFC West. A couple plays would have made the difference in getting the Chargers to the playoffs, so they don’t need to improve much to get there next year. Right Call?

A late rally by Norv Turner's offense was marred by poor clock management but did result in a touchdown to bring it back to 17-14.  A failed onside kick gave the road team the ball, which they ran on four straight plays including a gutsy fourth-and-one conversion by Thomas Jones to secure the win. All the Chargers could do was watch.

close out the regular season, I think they're as ready as they've ever been to take the next step. Norv Turner is an underrated coach with an underrated quarterback in Philip Rivers. Their explosiveness on offense makes up for their better-than-average defense.

Each week, I will look into my (never wrong, just misinformed) crystal ball and give my predictions for that weekend’s games.  I will prognosticate on all the playoff games each week.  Keep in mind, that this is for entertainment purposes only, and that I do not endorse any sort of legal or illegal gambling.  That being said…let’s see what’s in my crystal ball!

ng for the underdogs in several games, but none more than in the Indianapolis-San Diego game.  Norv Turner has been maligned at all his head coaching stops.  He wasn’t the favored choice after Marty was fired.  After all, who fires a legendary coach after a 14-2 season?  The Bolts did…so enter Norv.  The Chargers didn’t live up to expectations last year, as they failed to reach the Super Bowl.  All eyes were on Turner.  This season, Norv ran into a roadblock that is very difficult to negotiate…the referees.  But, the Chargers persevered, and they were able to capture the division crown at a mere 8-8.

On Saturday night, the Cowboys had a golden opportunity to close out Texas Stadium in style.  This was the final game to be played at the stadium.  A Cowboys win would have been a fitting end to a stadium that has had many classic games.  A win, and the Cowboys would have been one step further in their quest for a playoff berth, and a Super Bowl run.

Each week, on Friday, I will look into my (never wrong, just misinformed) crystal ball and give my predictions for that weekend’s games.  I will always prognosticate on the Eagles and Cowboys games and then pick two more games of interest (to me, that is, not necessarily to you).  Keep in mind, that this is for entertainment purposes only, and that I do not endorse any sort of legal or illegal gambling.  That being said…let’s see what’s in my crystal ball!

ng fullback…everyone knows they could use one!

James S., San Diego, CA: Norv Turner is the worst coach ever and he has destroyed a great team.  Bring back Marty ball!

rry Jones did an extensive search to find his replacement.  It was believed, at the time, that Norv Turner was the front-runner.  The new head coach was going to inherit Jason Garrett, as Mr. Jones had already hired Garrett as the OC.  In the end, Jones decided on Wade Phillips.  The reasoning was that the Cowboys defense needed a proven “3-4 guy” to take what Parcells started to the next level.

I wasn’t very excited about Norv Turner, but he proved me wrong by taking the San Diego Chargers almost there this season. This tells me he wasn’t all bad. But asking Lane Kiffin

eam made me a believer! I take back every less than flattering statement I have ever uttered about Norv Turner!  He really is an NFL coach that deserves respect.

Next up, San Diego faces a challenging match-up in New England against the steamroller Patriots. They have weak spots; they just need to be exploited. The Chargers defense has as good of a chance as any to shut down the Pats offense. I know I’ll be having a heart attack or nervous breakdown through every play in the game. And to think, I thought the Chargers were done halfway through the season!
