Orlando Pace

12 November 2009

Most of the Bears’ ten penalties could be attributed to the offensive line. Orlando Pace was on the sideline towards the end of the game and honestly, I never noticed when he went out. It didn’t matter. It was that bad.

nsive line play was atrocious, even with the insertion of Josh Beekman at guard over Frank Omiyale. Orlando Pace is an easily-movable husk of his Pro Bowl self, providing no protection for Cutler’s backside. To me, it always seems like the coaching staff has never seen pressure before and can’t prep their players on how to guard against it. Still, someone is missing their assignments. On one play I saw three Bears blocking one Brown, only to let another by on his way to hit Cutler. Inexcusable.

ehind fantastic offensive lines that give them plenty of time to find open receivers.

Orlando Pace should me moved to right tackle and Chris Williams should switch to left. He’s going to eventually anyway and Pace isn’t helping on the left side. With the money they spent on Frank Omiyale, the Bears may have to give more him time to gel in the position before bringing in Josh Beekman.

Eventual Hall of Famer Orlando Pace committed the most costly of infractions, when he moved prematurely on a fourth down and one from the Falcons’ five yard line, cutting down on Chicago’s possible play-calls.

You can tell Ron Turner is having fun with his new toy.

Orlando Pace got schooled by Elvis Dumervil. Plan and simple. Pace is old slow and big, whereas Dumervil is short and speedy. Despite Pace’s weakness against short rushers, Cutler was never sacked, getting the ball away on time, every time.

nett, Olsen, and Forte were made possible from a fantastic night for the first team offensive line. Orlando Pace looked young and spry against one of the best defensive lines in the NFL.

It wasn’t all perfect for the offense though. Devin Hester completely misread what would have been a 91-yard touchdown snag and slowed down after blowing by a defender, under-running a Cutler bomb. Obviously, he needs some work. (Like we all knew anyway.)

Mmm… draft weekend. I live for it. Call me crazy, call me an NFL freak, but I simply can’t get enough Mel Kiper or Todd McShay spouting off intangibles of some cornerback out of Florida State in the fifth round. I will be pasted to my couch this weekend, analyzing every Bears selection and dutifully following the ticker at the bottom of the screen.

2 April 2009

minutes to an hour later, news broke that Chicago also signed the definite Hall of Fame left tackle Orlando Pace to a three-year contract worth about 15 million dollars. Pace is getting older and had injury issues the past two seasons, but when healthy he is a definite upgrade to an already revamped offensive line. Pace will likely start at left tackle, shifting last year’s first round pick Chris Williams over to right tackle where he could battle with newly signed Kevin Shaffer. Frank Omiyale, the Bears’ first move in free agency, will probably slide to right guard alongside Pro Bowl center Olin Kreutz and left guard Roberto Garza. Chicago has established depth along the offensive line, which was a primary objective of the off-season. Now Angelo should take a closer look at recently released Torry Holt and gauge his interest in joining the new-look Bears. He will surely use his second round selection in the upcoming draft on a receiver and the compensatory pick on an offensive lineman. Second year receiver Earl Bennett (also Chris Williams) was Cutler’s teammate at Vanderbilt and enjoyed tremendous success alongside the talented QB. Matt Forte will take pressure off Cutler early on, allowing him to find cohesiveness with his wide-outs. Greg Olsen will have a break-out season with Cutler. Count on it.
