Paul Pierce

5 November 2008

It was a game many Houston Rockets' fans circled on the teams' calendar as their first "can't miss game of the season". Celtics coach Doc Rivers told reporters leading up to Tuesday that games in November matter as much as games in April due to playoff implications. Newspapers and local radio hosts hyped Tracy McGrady as the new Kevin Garnett in terms of having some success in the league, but never being able to get a ring. All of that led to Tuesday's nights game matching the Houston Rockets against the Defending World Champions, Boston Celtics.

Offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships. Defense.

Play-Makers. Paul Pierce has been the heart and soul of the entire Celtics organization for the past 10 years, but his efforts, although impressive could not win the Celtics a championship. He could not do what needed to be done all by himself. The Celtics management saw this and went out and got the players

I remember cheering for the tandem of Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker in the playoffs, because, well, the Eastern Conference was pretty horrible back then.

So, I’ve never really had a hatred for them. The reason is the Truth. I’ve always loved

n Garnett.

I was only half right.

Through five games, the Finals have been all about Bryant and Paul Pierce. Bryant may not be playing at optimum level by his and our standards, but the reigning MVP has managed to keep his Lakers in the series despite averaging less (down from 30.6 to 26.4) and shooting poorly (from 48.8 to 42.4).

The SF position has been a complete disadvantage, Walton and Vlad Rad have been horrible and Paul Pierce has been brilliant.

But the onus falls squarely on #24’s shoulders. He’s this year’s MVP. He’s the one who demanded more help, and he’s the one everyone is calling the best player in the game. In the first 3 rounds, Kobe lived up to the hype. He averaged nearly 32 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists on 51 percent shooting. Phenomenal. He led his team into a sweep of the 50-win Nugs, out of a dogfight with the Jazz and straight through the hearts of the defending champs.

Lakers fans will tell you that the Lakers haven’t hit their stride. That Kobe isn’t playing the same way that he was in the first three series. That he isn’t moving the ball. That he’s taking too many bad shots. They say that Lamar Odom is struggling through nerves and that Pau Gasol is playing soft.

to lead the Boston Celtics to a 98-88 victory over the Lakers before a gushing Boston Garden crowd, Paul Pierce (aka The Truth) admitted he is feeling sharp pains in his right knee and revealed that if Game 2 was played Friday he would be a scratch.

Well, I can tell you this much, Sammy boy could be the X-Factor. In fact, between him and Paul Pierce, they might have enough veteran clutchness to out-clutch Kobe. I literally am pissing in my pants.  An unexpected though admittedly should-have-been-expected wrinkle in the series.

Pow!

Everybody’s talking about Pau’s monster game. ESPN’s JA Adande is reminding folks about the legacy of Lakers’ big men. A 36-point, 16-rebound, 8-assist, 3-block game will get people to notice. Kobe dropped 32 but shot a putrid 9-26. After the game, #24 talked about how he was the decoy and how the Lakers have a vicious 1-2 punch.

Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett

Why they are the MVP:  They turned around one of the worst teams in the league from a year ago.  They have given up the stats of superstars and meshed with Ray Allen and the role players to make the Celtics not just relevant again, but a powerhouse.

Then there's the ultimate slasher in Paul Pierce. He's like the O.J. of the NBA. There are not many guys in the league who can get to the basket like Pierce.  Half the time he barrels over well positioned defenders, but somehow manages to draw fouls for huge three point plays. In O.J. fashion, he gets away with it by reputation, or by using his athleticism to Pierce and knife through unmatched defenders.  Judge Ito would love Paul "The Truth" Pierce.

In any case, Boston cut a 5-point deficit in the final two and a half minutes down to 2, when Paul Pierce got fouled by himself and went to the line for two big free throws with 28 seconds left.  It was an offensive foul in my opinion; Pierce bowled over a well positioned Mickael Pietrus.  But Super Stars get those calls late in games for some reason.  After nailing two clutch offensive foul shots, to trim the lead to 117-115, inexplicably, Matt Barnes, who's a bench player, threw up a bad shot and Pierce grabbed the rebound with 12 seconds left.
