My prediction is as much their schedule as it is the team on the field.

Last year in San Francisco, the story was the quarterback. Shaun Hill had earned the starting job in coach Mike Singletary's eyes, but was very pedestrian in his starts. That allowed former number one overall pick Alex Smith to reclaim the starter's job. Running back Frank Gore's production has been hampered by injuries in recent years, which was going to lead to an increased role for back-up Glen Coffee before he abruptly retired earlier this week. Early Monday, former Eagle Brian Westbrook signed on with the Niners to back-up Gore, adding a different pass-catching element to their backfield. Drafting Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis should immediately upgrade their offensive line. With Vernon Davis at tight end and Michael Crabtree in his first full year at wide receiver the 'Frisco offense won't be at the bottom of the league. (Unless Smith sucks, which is highly possible.)

Jacksonville Jaguars (6-4) at San Francisco 49ers (4-6)

This game has the recipe to be ugly. Jacksonville and Tennessee both love to mercilessly pound the ball at their opponent. The difference will be at the quarterback position. Between Alex Smith and David Garrard, the quarterback that makes the least mistakes will walk away with the win. To me, that means a Jaguars victory as Alex Smith hasn’t shown he’s dependable at all. Keep an eye on these Jags; they’re right in line for a wildcard slot.

I can’t blame the defense this time. On Thursday night, the Bears offense did everything they could to lose this game. Ten penalties and five Jay Cutler interceptions prevented Chicago from leaving Candlestick Park with a victory. I won’t bother boring you with the minutiae.  The final score: San Francisco 10, Chicago Bears 6.

San Francisco 49ers (3-5)

49ers tight end Vernon Davis recently made headlines with his bashing of the Bears’ once-vaunted defense. "I think we can destroy their front. The guys up front, I think we can destroy them. “I don't see anything spectacular about their front line. Their linebackers, I think we can handle them pretty well.” Hmm. While insulting as those comments may be, Davis is spot-on. The Bears haven’t pressured much of anybody and their pass coverage has been mediocre at best. They’re even being gouged by the run. Still, Niners QB Alex Smith can hurl interceptions with the worst of them, so I doubt another total domination is in the books.

(3-4) San Francisco 49ers 14

Peyton Manning: crusher of dreams, destroyer of worlds, spokesman of many. The Colts continued their undefeated ways against the Niners thanks to Manning’s 347 yards passing. Alex Smith performed well, but 14 points will never be enough to stop Manning’s men. Running back Joseph Addai’s 22-yard TD pass to Reggie Wayne was glorious. What isn’t pretty is San Fran’s play of late, having lost three of their last four. Mike might need to drop his pants again if his club is to take the division.

(4-3) Houston Texans 24
(3-3) San Francisco 49ers 21 

Well, they almost blew it, but the Texans held onto the victory to get over .500 this season. In an AFC south with the inconsistent Jaguars and winless Titans, the Texans could make a strong showing for second and a winning record. Meanwhile, over in San Fran, the Niners have lost three straight. They benched Shaun Hill at halftime and brought in former number one pick Alex Smith, who tossed three TD’s to Vernon Davis (who is a beast) to close the gap. Smith will start next week. Also a storyline was Michael Crabtree’s insertion into the starting line-up, catching five passes for 56 yards. It may not sound like a lot, but for someone that has only been with the team a few weeks, it’s impressive.

(3-2) San Francisco 49ers at (3-3) Houston Texans 

Houston could turn some heads if their second straight victory comes at the expense of the hard-nosed Niners. Singletary’s group should be fuming after their horrid loss to the Falcons two weeks ago. Still, I can’t get too excited about these teams. Both have too many issues to be legitimate contenders.

Hm. I can’t for the life of me figure this game out. Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons unleashed absolute hell on the Niners. Michael Turner rushed for three TD’s and Ryan tossed two more in this blow-out win. Where did Mike Singletary’s disciplined defense go?

Atlanta Falcons (2-1) at San Francisco 49ers (3-1) 

Fresh off of a bye week, the Falcons need to ramp it up a notch if they’re going to leave San Francisco with a win. Their running game has failed to produce at last season’s high level and Matt Ryan has not been getting the ball downfield. The Niners, on the other hand, just blanked St. Louis 35-0 in week four. Mike Singletary’s team is persevering despite a low-powered passing attack. Throwing safe passes, running the ball and not being afraid to punt have been the key to success in San Fran.

We’ve all seen or heard of Favre’s late game heroics. I blame Mike Singletary’s defense, which put only two players on the endzone. There were five Niners in the middle of the field! Everyone knows when they need a touchdown on the final play of the game you stack men in the endzone so they can bat the ball down. Horrible call from a good coach.

Jim Zorn is already under pressure for his inept offense that barely put away the Rams last week.

San Francisco 49ers (2-0) at Minnesota Vikings (2-0)

One of these two hard-nosed squads will finally lose this week. Unfortunately, Niners QB Shaun Hill can’t put up enough points up to hang with Brett Favre, Adrian Peterson and the Vikings for very long. Mike Singletary’s defense needs to go above and beyond if they’re going to stay undefeated.

Mike Singletary’s hard-nosed style has gotten the Niners off to a superb start. Frank Gore racked up 207 yards on only 16 carries. Matt Hasselbeck left the game with a fractured rib. If he’s out for any length of time, it could be disastrous for the Seahawks’ season.

Seattle sure looked great in their 28-0 whomping of the Rams. Now it’s time to test that resolve against Mike Singletary’s Niners, who just defeated the defending NFC champs. The prize at stake is an early lead in the NFC West.

Philly needs to win out and get some help, but their post-season hopes aren’t dashed yet.

San Francisco 49ers 24, New York Jets 14

When Shaun Hill out-duels Brett Favre, something is wrong in the world. Something is obviously wrong with the Jets also, who have lost two in a row since beating the Titans and becoming the belle of the AFC ball. The Jets only rushed 12 times total on Sunday, not allowing Thomas Jones to continue his Pro-Bowl caliber production. San Francisco has one three of their last four under Mike Singletary, who may have earned himself a job for 2009. The 49ers fumbled five times during the game but only lost one, proving that a few lucky bounces can go a long way in this league.

Another week is in the books in the National Football League as we head to Week 15. But first let's take a look back at the week that was...Week 14! (my tongue is getting twisted) Several surprising outcomes this past Sunday including a few of the games I picked. I went a disappointing 1-3 in my picks. Very poor performance on my part. I'm finally realizing I'll never have a grip on the NFL. It's the most inconsistent professional sport out there. Any team can lose on any given week. The Jets were surprised at home by the Denver Broncos last Sunday. This week they fly into San Francisco to take on the 4-8 49ers. Jets are 0-2 in the West Coast this season (losses against San Diego and Oakland). I however have a feeling that Brett Favre and company will bounce back after last week. The AFC East is still up for grabs and I believe that the Jets will hang on to sole possession of first. The 49ers are not a good football team. So I'll go with the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets in this one. Ring it up.

2) San Francisco 49ers @ Dallas Cowboys

This is what the Cowboys need. A winnable game at home. The 49ers are 3-7 (2nd though in the NFC West if you can believe that). The Cowboys need to keep winning to stay in the thick of the NFC East. Terrell Owens and Roy Williams should see the ball quite often (start em in Fantasy!) and the Cowboys should roll in this one.

Week 7 is officially in the books as Tuesday, the 21st of October rolls around today. This week's Fallout report will cover the most interesting games from the week 7 slate in the National Football League. The alarm is going off in Big D as the Cowboys struggle for the second week in a row to find a win, the Vikings put up 41 in a loss, and Brett Farve gets the ball three times in overtime against the struggling Raiders, but can't chip any points in. I'll cover those happenings....right now!

Philadelphia Eagles (2-3) at San Francisco 49ers (2-3)

This is a must-win for two teams that were trendy picks to make an appearance in the post-season. Philadelphia will almost certainly be on the outside looking in come January if they lose, as their divisional flat-mates all have very winnable games for the weekend. Brian Westbrook is out for another week with broken ribs, so the Eagles will have problems rushing against Mike Nolan’s stout defense. Donovan McNabb, despite his claims of being “embarrassed” by his play must pick up his team to prevent falling into a 2-4 hole in the toughest division in football. The 49ers started strong, winning two of three, but have since dropped two straight. Luckily, the first place Cardinals are only 3-2 and face a tough Dallas team, so this is an opportunity for San Francisco to jump back into first place. J.T. O’Sullivan needs to make the Eagles pay for their aggressive blitzes early, or the most sacked quarterback in the league will have another painful afternoon.

I believe that a 5-11 record is misleading. The 49ers are a much worse team then that. Perhaps it’s the fact that they play in a horrible NFC West division. Perhaps it’s the lack of playmakers. Whatever the reason, the 49ers are not a good team and they haven’t been for quite some time. This is not the team of Montana and Rice. This is not the team that won 4 superbowls. The team that this organization fields is a disgrace to the great 49er teams of old and I am trying to say that in the nicest way possible.

The Bears emerged victorious from the courtroom earlier this week with a decisive off-the-field victory over the embittered 49ers. According to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, San Francisco illegally contacted Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs’ uber-agent, Drew Rosenhaus, during the 2007 season – a “blatant, outright, stupid, stupid, stupid violation of NFL anti-tampering policy,” he remarked. “We basically caught [San Francisco GM] Scot McCloughan with his hands in the proverbial cookie jar. If you know what I mean.” This attempt at humor left many witnesses baffled and appalled, especially when the commissioner followed it up with a series of erratic winks.

     It's not exactly Ditka vs Walsh, but the battle between the Bears and the 49ers over the proposed trade of Lance Briggs does have some drama to it.

     According to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer , the Bears will bring a case to the commissioner's office regarding potential tampering problems between the 49ers and Brigg's agent Drew Rosenhaus.  At issue was a proposed trade between the two teams involving Briggs heading out west.  The problem is, according to the Bears, the 49ers began talks with Rosenhaus about the deal before the team granted permission to do so.

Yup - we were at Monster Park today to see the San Francisco 49ers host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs didn’t really have to worry much about the game’s outcome. The team is playoff bound regardless but the 49ers wanted a win very badly. This game was QB Jeff Garcia’s “homecoming” and possibly Bryant Young’s last appearance.

Growing up with the sport pre-salary cap, you always had the old stand-bys that won. The San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders, and Pittsburgh Steelers made appearance after appearance in the post-season and nearly every other team was just window dressing. Later, when the cap came along things slowly changed. The shift has been interesting and it has taken me a bit to become accustomed to teams from smaller markets and without storied pasts gaining prominence.
