Todd Collins

et the 23-6 win over the Carolina Panthers and climb to 4-1 on the year.

For everyone who thought Todd Collins' preseason outings were so impressive, I present you with his stat line for the day: six out of 16 for 32 yards and a massive four interceptions. That's a recipe for benching a back-up if I've ever heard one. Man, he was so worth that money. Collins couldn't complete any pass medium range or over, relying instead on checkdowns for his few rare completions. After three quarters of his ineptitude the Bears had seen enough and brought in Caleb Hanie to finish out the dirty win. 29 passing yards is ridiculously bad, but at least the offensive line didn't have to protect on 35 drop-backs.

r />(0-4) Carolina Panthers

Following Jay Cutler's concussion after sack number nine, 39-year old Todd Collins gets the start this week in Carolina, with Caleb Hanie serving as the back-up. Less mobile than Hanie, Collins knows how to get the ball out quickly and avoid taking the sack. As nice as it would have been, the Bears will not get left tackle Chris Williams back this week as he's still out with a hamstring injury, which keeps the offensive line in flux. If they struggle early against a Panther defense with 12 sacks this season, Mike Tice and Lovie Smith are likely to keep tinkering with the line-up during the course of the game. Carolina's front four includes ex-Colt Ed Johnson and Panther draft picks Everette Brown and Charles Johnson. They're inexperienced and lack the raw talent of the Giant front that caused so many problems for the Bears.

The Bears failed to make the right adjustments throughout the course of the game until Todd Collins came in. Note how they only gave up one sack in the second half? If Collins and Hanie can do that, so can Cutler. It's called coaching, try it sometime. The Bears were never able to move the ball down the field or hit any wide receivers, and the tight ends didn't get invovled until late, which is inexcusable.

Backing him up will be Todd Collins, a journeyman back-up that will competently run the offense if needed, but let's hope it never gets to him.

He looks like a grown-up now. Well done Jay.

ue...sorta

After bringing him in less than two weeks ago, the Bears started veteran back-up Todd Collins in Cleveland Thursday night. He did not disappoint. Collins was crisp and clean in the half of action he saw, showing no rust of a player who hadn't seen a practice field in months. He's a career back-up who knows how to play the game and find the open receivers well. That being said, playing well against Cleveland's second team defense doesn't mean all that much. So no one should be calling for Jay Cutler's benching after seeing this ONE game. He'll make Lovie Smith sleep better at night, but let's hope nothing else.

Here's to scrubs!

Have a stiff Todd Collins to drink

Yep, since Jay won't see the field at all, back-up Todd Collins will be under center most of the night. He needs the reps if he's going to be the back-up at all during the regular season. We'll get a little LeFevour as well, but Collins needs to shake off some rust.

ve the day!

After initially not agreeing to terms, the Bears finally signed veteran back-up Todd Collins to "provide insurance" behind Jay Cutler if Caleb Hanie isn't ready to return by the season opener. Don't expect much out of him tonight though. He'll likely see most of his action next week. Do you feel safer already?
