Tommie Harris

16 January 2011

ir taking it easy in the second half, the Bear defense came out and did exactly what was necessary. Tommie Harris accounted for Chicago’s two sacks of Matt Hasselbeck, making the most of his time on the field. Holding Seattle to only 34 yards on the day is impressive for a team that ran all over the Saints whenever they wanted. No “Beast mode” today Mr. Lynch. Let’s just remember though, they were playing the Seahawks. Just saying.

enching for some as Lovie Smith decided to shelve any player he didn't like or underperformed. Tommie Harris and Devin Aromashodu were benched via coach's decision before the game and Zack Bowman and Kevin Shaffer were pulled during the game. If you weren't playing up to snuff, you got benched. I'm not sure what Harris' issue was, but it meant enough to the coaching staff to declare him inactive for their biggest game so far. Missed tackles cost the Bear defense plenty of yards, but holding Aaron Rodgers and that offense to 17 points is about as good as it's going to get.

this week with a knee injury, so look for Peppers to test him early and often with the speed rush. Tommie Harris has to help get penetration up the middle so Rodgers can't step up in the pocket and the limited Packer running game has to bounce it to the outside against the speedy Bear defense. ***UPDATE Harris will be inactive tonight due to a coach's decision. Sounds like someone's been a bad boy. Or an idiot, either one. That's not great. Matt Toeaina will get the start in his place. Without Ryan Grant, the Packers will only run the ball to keep Chicago honest. If they need a first down, they're going through the air.

His presence is hopefully going to ease the pressure of tackle Tommie Harris, who is far removed from the dominant force he was in his early seasons. Always with knee troubles, Harris doesn't have long to redeem himself before he's a lost cause. With Peppers, Harris will see far less double teams and must make the most of his opportunities to wreak havoc. Anthony Adams, Marcus Harrison and Matt Toeaina will fill the other tackle spot and give Harris rest on occasion. None are game-breakers, but they play the run well and serve as a quality three-man rotation. At the left end position, Mark Anderson and Israel Idonije must fill the void left by Alex Brown, whom the team let go in the offseason. Brown was always stout against the run, but his pass rush was never more than decent. If the two of them can tally between 8 and 10 sacks, I'd say they did their job.

know Peppers will find his way to the quarterback, but what about Mark Anderson, Israel Idonije and Tommie Harris? Matt Toeaina has impressed Rod Marinelli, but he's not going to explode to the quarterback from the tackle position. Make no mistake, the success of the Bear defense this year relies on the success of the defensive line.

Drool.

-That chop-block on Tommie Harris didn't look pretty. Remember, his knees are always giving him problems even without lineman diving at them. It remains to be seen if he'll miss any time, but I wouldn't be surprised if he sat out of practice a couple days this week.

They gave up only 216 yards of offense, sacked Alex Smith twice and intercepted one pass. Tommie Harris had a solid game after being ejected early against the Cardinals.  When did the Bears begin to master the screen pass? I remember this offense never could get this play right. They must be like, practicing or something. What a novel idea. While Forte didn’t rush well, he did catch 8 passes for 120 yards, mostly off of screen passes. Greg Olsen and Devin Hester added another 7 receptions each.

ting to Chicago’s pathetic defensive effort was the most idiotic play of the day, credited to Tommie Harris. On the fifth play of the game, Harris punched Arizona’s Deuce Lutui in the helmet while the two were on the ground. The officials wasted no time in ejecting Harris from the game for his unsportsmanlike conduct. That left a hole up the middle in the Bears’ defense that allowed their rushing attack to succeed most of the day. Harris has failed to show up this season and his bone-headed play gave him another excuse to not make an impact.

Marcus Harrison did not provide a lot of spark at the DT spot opposite Tommie Harris, replacing Anthony Adams. Speaking of Harris, he still looks injured. Just lettin’ you know.

Cornerback Charles Tillman looked solid as always, one of the most consistent performers for Chicago this season. An interception and fumble recovery to go along with four tackles proved his worth to me.

Just maybe.)

Cleveland’s offensive line has given up 18 sacks, so Tommie Harris and the front four of the Bears must get pressure on whatever QB is in the game. That will allow the line backers to make plays on the running backs and the secondary to make plays on the ball. Hunter Hillenmeyer will be sliding back over to the middle linebacker spot to help their play-calling and Nick Roach will move back to the strong side. Expect to see more Gaines Adams at defensive end and Nathan Vasher filling in at times at the free safety spot.

-Tommie Harris will never be healthy again. It’s sad but true. After the craziness and contrasting information that came out of the Bears staff this week, Harris said his knee was not the reason he missed Sunday’s game. Pardon? If you’re not injured you should freaking be playing! Chicago needs to make a move in free agency for a defensive tackle (since we don’t have many draft picks) to offset Harris’ lack of production.

ht down to it in my Gameday Preview!

On defense, the Bears will be without defensive tackle Tommie Harris, who will likely be inactive with a knee injury. Yes, that same knee injury he’s been bothered by for years. Ever since Harris signed that contract extension, he’s failed to be healthy enough to earn his money. Second year player Marcus Harrison will either slide over to Harris’ spot with Anthony Adams at NT or see more time in the nose tackle slot himself. Further along the defensive line, we should see the debut of Gaines Adams, for whom the Bears recently traded a second-round pick to the Buccaneers. It’s still unclear how much Adams will play, but any contribution will be a welcome one.

18 October 2009

the Bears are ready for some payback.

In order to suppress the Falcons improving offense, Tommie Harris MUST get pressure up the middle. Not only to hurry quarterback Matt Ryan but to disrupt Michael Turner and Atlanta’s running game. Harris has not been healthy enough to wreak his typical havoc, but the extra week of rest should make for a better performance.

sp;

After another short field, the Bears squared the game again with a Kellen Davis endzone snag. Tommie Harris intercepted an errant Stafford pass on the Lions following drive to set up another touchdown, this time on fourth and goal to Greg Olsen. (For the second week in a row.) Still, the Lions were not out.

25 September 2009

Speaking of injuries, Tommie Harris needs to show some burst out there so he can help a still-improving pass rush.

Chicago’s secondary will have a tough time covering Deion Branch, Nate Burleson, and new acquisition T.J. Housmandzadeh, all of whom are dangerous. Again, without Hasselbeck under center, that job should be marginally easier. Seattle’s running game is better than advertised, racking up 4.1 yards a carry early in the season.

Keep an eye on oft-injured Tommie Harris and the other defensive linemen. If they can help Urlacher and the linebackers shut down the Packers’ running game and make them one-dimensional, the Bears could make it out of Wisconsin with a victory. Pressuring Rodgers is the only way to get him off his game; otherwise he’ll pick this Bear secondary apart.

22 April 2009

OT an area of need? It seems every off-season we’re discussing adding depth in the event that Tommie Harris misses time (which he will). Having too many skilled tackles is never a problem, but the defensive end spot dragged last year, with Mark Anderson disappearing and Adewale Ogunleye not justifying his hefty price tag. Alex Brown was the only end close to pulling his weight, but even he is vastly overpaid.  Angelo is ALWAYS looking for solid d-line talent. He’s liable to take a flier on a lineman with any pick.

14 November 2008

nleye has disappeared, Alex Brown only plays the run well, Mark Anderson barely sees the field, and Tommie Harris hasn’t been healthy enough to make the impact we all expect of him. All of those players have signed lucrative contracts, and now they’re starting to show a lackadaisical effort on the field. Rookie Marcus Harrison and finally healthy Dusty Dvoracek contribute the most on the defensive front, showing great awareness and taking up multiple blocks to free up the rest of the line. It’s such a shame that their effort is wasted on teammates that can’t beat their individual blockers. If things remain the same during the rest of the year I wouldn’t be surprised to a major shake-up in this unit during the off-season. Their lack of production has exposed the secondary, who are better when they can jam the wide receivers off their routes. If they press on the outside while their line gets pressure on the QB, everything works to perfection. Without the pressure, a corner’s jam may screw with a route’s timing, but the receivers will eventually make adjustments and find the openings in the coverage.

e with a quad injury, but appears to be fine, as he doesn’t even appear on the injury report. Tommie Harris was the only active Bear to sit out of Wednesday’s proceedings, which is aggravatingly status quo for this season. I know players are going to get hurt and play hurt during a season, but Harris has been playing hurt for his entire career it seems. It significantly detracts from his on-field production, as has been the case in 2008. He’s also listed as probable for Sunday, but obviously won’t be at 100%. Linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer is recovering from the thumb surgery he had after the Minnesota game and is questionable, with back-up Nick Roach prepared to fill-in. Wide-out Brandon Lloyd and corner Danieal Manning join Hillenmeyer as questionable, as each will most likely be a game-time decision.

20 October 2008

They sacked Frerotte twice, one coming off of a safety blitz by Kevin Payne and the other from Tommie Harris on Minnesota’s final drive. Outside of those positives, the Bears were awful on defense. They let the Viking wide receivers beat them time and again as well as allowing Adrian Peterson to rush for 121 yards thanks to a 54 yarder he broke for one of his two touchdowns. Besides his few awful throws, Frerotte was on target, racking up almost 300 yards passing to go with his two scores.

They’ll also need a better effort from defensive tackle Tommie Harris, whose production is at a career low. Stopping Peterson will rely on his penetration in the middle of the Minnesota offensive line. If he has a poor showing, so will the Bears’ defense.

13 October 2008

The stats will say each team lost a fumble, but both occurred on the same play. Tommie Harris recovered a Falcon fumble on the ground, and somehow managed to lose control of the ball as he attempted to stand up when he realized no one had made contact with him. It was a mind-numbingly dumb play from Harris, who had a few quarterback pressures on Sunday. He was part of an ineffective Chicago defensive line, which is unacceptable for the amount of money that’s invested in it. The Bears are forced to blitz to be effective, but that exposes an injured secondary. There are just too many problems for such a highly paid defense.
