Zack Bowman

25 December 2011

awful performance by any means.

After benching Tim Jennings for his apparent screw-ups last week, Zack Bowman came out and got absolutely lit up on SEVERAL occasions. Two goal line slants and one back-shoulder throw fooled Bowman for three of the Packers’ scores. What astounded me is how easy the slant patterns (Nelson and Jones) came for Rodgers and company. They love that play at the goal line and it seemed as if the Bears had NO idea. That, idiotic penalties and the Jordy Nelson 55-yard score made up the list of mistakes the secondary made tonight. And where was the defensive line to make up for their deficiencies? Not taking advantage of a banged-up offensive line, apparently. Disappointing to be sure.

Rounding the Corners

Veteran corners Tim Jennings and Zack Bowman have been entrenched in a battle for the second corner slot behind Charles Tillman. With an open competition in his midst, Smith will need to see some stand-out plays to get a clear-cut winner. Otherwise we’ll be treated with an endless amount of swapping as the season progresses. Bowman might be more of a ball-hawk when he’s healthy, but in my opinion, Jennings is the better tackler, a necessity in the cover-two scheme. Pay close attention Jennings tonight, as Bowman sits out with yet another injury. Winner by default?

Tim Jennings and Zack Bowman played well enough at the left cornerback spot, but eventually Lovie will have to pick one and stick with him. Bowman's strip of Ahmad Bradshaw probably earned him next week's start.

hings ugly.

Despite the Cowboys' excellent wide-outs, the Bears match up better than you'd think. Zack Bowman will have some trouble with Miles Austin (as everyone does), but he won't be under-sized and will certainly get help over the top. Charles Tillman should get plenty of Roy Williams, who can't out-run anybody. Dez Bryant is the wildcard of the group, and could take advantage of D.J. Moore. Tillman could see him a bit as well. Where the Bears will see problems is in covering tight end Jason Witten. He's bigger than their safeties and faster than their linebackers and catches almost everything he sees. Still, if the Bears can keep everyone else under wraps, letting Witten go won't hurt as much.

Lovie Smith has taken Zack Bowman and given him the top corner spot, putting Tillman on the left side. Bowman is slightly under-sized, but has better coverage skills and is more physical at this point in his career. (Tillman could be a safety, just saying.) Unfortunately, neither player is a lock-down corner that will shut off one side of the offense. Bowman will be tested early on the opponent's top targets unless Tillman's size is more useful. (Like with Detroit's Calvin Johnson.) D.J. Moore will get looks early on at the nickel spot, but his 5'9" size is a problem. This group will see its fair share of problems over the course of the season, but how many remains to be seen.

he coaching staff in practice, now we see if he can do the same on the field.

Crossing corners:

Zack Bowman has risen to the number one corner slot, replacing Charles Tillman. A natural ball-hawk, Bowman has had trouble staying healthy and in the line-up. On the other side, Tillman is still struggling to pick up the nuances of the switch and hasn't had a great camp so far. The top two corners on this defense need to be at their best if the Bears are to create turnovers like they have in years past.

ons on the offensive side of the ball. Getting to Ryan early and often will be paramount. Zack Bowman have better speed than Charles Tillman, so he should be opposite White for most of the game unless he struggles. Gonzalez might have been the best pick-up of the offseason, so don't be surprised if he has a big day against a linebacking corps missing Brian Urlacher and Hunter Hillenmeyer.

First, it took Lovie Smith a full half to realize Zack Bowman wasn’t getting the job done against Calvin Johnson. Johnson gained 119 of his 133 receiving yards in that first half, matching up against the smaller Bowman. When they went to Charles Tillman in the second half, Johnson was limited until he went out with a leg injury of his own.

Another expected shuffle in the secondary, Zack Bowman will start in place of Nathan Vasher. This is the best secondary line-up I think the Bears can currently put on the field, let's see if it works.

4 September 2009

After a Zack Bowman interception on the first play from scrimmage, Jay Cutler took the field and handed off to back-up running back Kevin Jones six times, leading to a Robbie Gould field goal. Matt Forte didn't even play. After those first seven plays, it was scrub time.
